DELVING INTO GOD'S GRACE (DiGG) CLASS
Sundays from 9:10 to 10:00 a.m.,

Martin Luther taught that we are to daily renew our baptism. Whether we are old or young, this daily renewal of baptism leads to a practicing of faith and deepening of discipleship. This year during Lent, the DIGG class will study the ELCA Lenten series "Living our Baptism." Each week we will study one phrase of the covenant which we make at the time of our baptism. This first week we will explore the faith practice "living among God's faithful people." Bill Johnson will lead the class discussion.

INTERSECTIONS CLASS
On March 10, 17, and 24, Bill Moore will lead a series of discussions that he calls "The One and the Many: Is this Christianity's biggest tension?" We will try to identify tensions that Christians have felt in the present and the past. Bill is proposing that there is a fundamental similarity among all these tensions between a preference for an individual person, group, or idea, or else for some larger variety or structure. Some of these tensions may block God's grace; some may spread God's grace. On March 10, the class will look at tensions within the self (i.e. being individually inspired or participating in a spiritual community); on March 17, we will look at tensions in the Church (such as differences among denominations); on March 24, we will discuss tensions in the world (such as Christianity's relation to other religions). Please join us!
The Intersections Class discusses a variety of topics that connect faith and life during the Sunday School time (9:10 to 10:00 a.m.). The program part of the class runs from 9:30 to 10:00 a.m., but people are welcome to come early and stay late to chat and enjoy refreshments. Please come join us in Room 6 to share your perspectives and hear from others.

After supper, join us for Lenten worship at 6:30 p.m. At each service, one of our members or friends will reflect on a promise of baptism, and how it impacts their life. Here are the promises of baptism and who will be speaking at each service:

KOINONIA COMMUNITY LENTEN SERVICES
The congregations that form Koinonia are taking turns hosting a 30-minute noon worship service, followed by lunch, during the Lenten season. As a part of the service, a local charitable organization is invited to speak briefly about its work, and participants have an opportunity to contribute to a free will offering that is given to the charity. Each year, the Koinonia Lenten series raises more than $3,500 for local causes, and people from different faith communities - or no faith community - come together for worship and fellowship with one another.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Did you know that the schools in our county collect Box Tops for Education? If you don't have young children or youth, you may not think about how helpful these items are to our community's schools, but they typically help to fund school equipment and other needed resources. And
teachers and school administrators will tell you - every little bit counts!
Good Shepherd is now collecting box tops. So if you don't have a child whose school collects them, you can turn them in here (look for the box on the table in the commons) and World and Community Committee members will distribute them to our local schools. Thank you!

HEARING LOSS ASSOCIATION MEETING
This group's next meeting will be on Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall at Good Shepherd. The room will open at 12:30 p.m. so people sign in, browse the free literature available, and meet others interested in discussing hearing problems and solutions. All are welcome.
Our program will feature Francisca Hernandez, MA LSLS, Parent Educator/Hispanic Outreach for BEGINNINGS for parents of children who are deaf and hard of hearing. BEGINNINGS is a non-profit that helps parents and families understand hearing loss and the diverse needs of children who are deaf or hard of hearing from birth to age 22 years. They provide impartial support to families regarding early intervention services, school age support, resources and modes of communication. BEGINNINGS parent educators also provide support to the professionals who serve these families.

The sister of Nancy Reuter, Carol Garro, passed away last Sunday.
Jesse, Donna Aiken-Colflesh's niece, is going through a difficult time.
Gloria and Roy Larson were in a serious car accident last week. They were banged up, but sustained no broken bones. They are recovering at home.
Rivers Smith is recovering from successful neck surgery on February 25.
Wanda Waters is recovering from hip surgery on February 26. She will spend a few days in the hospital and then transfer to a rehabilitation facility to complete her healing.
Sandy Taylor, friend of Barbara Hotaling, is experiencing breathing problems.
Lindsay Batson, daughter of Jamie Lancaster, is recovering from successful surgery last Friday.

TORNADO DISASTER RELIEF
On March 3, powerful tornadoes hit Alabama, Georgia and Florida, causing widespread destruction. At least 23 people have died in Lee County, Ala., and others are still unaccounted for. More than 1,000 homes have been damaged. Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) is working with those in the impacted states, including partnering with congregations in the Southeastern Synod to respond with immediate relief.
If you would like to contribute to the relief efforts, please make your check payable to LCGS and indicate "LDR - U.S. Tornadoes" on the memo line. Gifts will be used to help those affected by tornadoes until the response is complete. Together, we can support those who are on the long road to recovery.

KITS FOR LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF
This Lenten season, Good Shepherd will make personal care kits for Lutheran World Relief. Each week in Lent, we'll collect items to make these kits that help people around the world stay healthy in difficult situations, like natural disasters and displacement due to violence. On Palm Sunday, we'll assemble the kits during the coffee hours in the Fellowship Hall.
Please bring your donations in starting on February 10, and place them in the large bin on the pew in the commons. Here is the collection schedule:
- March 10: Bars of Soap (4 - 5 oz, any brand, in original wrapping)
- March 17: Bath Towels (light-weight, maximum 52" x 27", dark color)
- March 24: Toothbrushes (adult size, individually wrapped in original packaging or sealed individually in a paper envelope)
- March 31: Combs
- April 7: Nail Clippers (metal, attached file optional)

SOAP COLLECTION FOR THE PHILIPPINES
Florence Nightingale Global Health is collecting bars of soap to send to their friends in the Philippines. As you may know, FNGH, and our own Ann Farash and Paul Onnink, in conjunction with them and Pisgah Forest Rotary Club, have been working in partnership with the people of North Samar, who commonly live on
less than $2 per day, and cannot afford soap.
Any size bars of soap will be accepted, even the small bars found in hotel rooms.
Please drop off your bars of soap in the box on the pew in the commons. The soap will be shipped to the Philippines at the end of March. So far 59 pounds of soap have been collected. Thank you!

CHAMBER MUSIC CONCERT AT FUMC
The Dead Eduards Chamber Society will be performing a concert of chamber music this evening,
March 8
, at 7:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in
Brevard
.
The group features Andrea Pettigrew, violin, Jim Lestock, cello, Brian Seaton, oboe, and Vance Reese, piano. All are musicians in local orchestras and other ensembles, including the
Brevard
Philharmonic and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra. Reese is assistant professor of music at
Brevard College
.
The Chamber Society offers this as a true chamber music experience with the listeners sitting close by the musicians, and the performers sharing something of their lives in intersection with the music and the composers.
The composers represented are Henry Purcell, Joseph Haydn, J. S. Bach, Charles Loeffler, Joaquin Turina, and Joshua Burel. The music spans 325 years and covers a wide range of expressions and nationalities.
The concert is free. Audience members are welcome to make a "love offering" at the door for the experience.

TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY TRIAD MEETING
Triad is a national partnership among law enforcement, older adults, and those providing services to older adults. Triad's focus is to reduce the criminal victimization of older citizens, decrease unwarranted fear of crime, and improve the safety and quality of life for older adults.
The next Transylvania County Triad meeting will be held on Monday, March 25, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., in the

PEACE AND RECONCILIATION IN COLOMBIA
Here is another story from the ELCA series, Stories of Faith in Action 2018-2019.
At the House of Peace and Reconciliation in Medellín, Colombia, Lutherans strive to bring peace to a community torn by conflict for many years. Founded by Misión Luterana Emaús, a mission start of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia (IELCO), the House focuses on equipping people in the Comuna 13 neighborhood to resolve conflicts peacefully. The IELCO receives grants from the ELCA to support this work through Mission Support.
Since 1964, armed conflict in Colombia has left more than 600,000 people dead and has displaced nearly one of every 10 Colombians. While the recent peace agreement between the government and the main guerilla group holds promise, former combatants need to be reintegrated into everyday life.
"Our vision is not only to preach the gospel but to live the gospel in our community," said John Hernandez, pastor of Emaús. "The gospel gives us a special language to talk not only about peace but also reconciliation. Generally, in the Comuna 13, the need is to learn to coexist, to accept those that think differently."
Last year, the House of Peace and Reconciliation hosted a multi-session certificate program on peace and reconciliation that attracted 25 students from Comuna 13, and other faith communities and human rights and peace-focused organizations in Medellín. Students committed to replicating at least some of what they learned in their communities and organizations.
In the House's theater group, young participants use theater as a creative tool to process experiences and heal. This year they are preparing to perform an adaptation of the Bible story of the feeding of the 5,000 throughout the neighborhood and for the national IELCO education gathering.
They hope to send a message "that we can abandon the presumption of scarcity and begin to trust in the abundance of resources around us," Hernandez said.

INDIA: SHARING THE GOSPEL AND
WORKING FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN TAMIL NADU

(GSC) is located. Members and friends of Good Shepherd have helped to financially support GSC since it began in 2010.
The Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC) is marking two major milestones this year - its 100th anniversary as an independent church body in India, and the consecration of a newly elected leader Bishop Daniel Jayaraj.
Its constitution as TELC on 14 January 1919 emerged from a joint venture by the Danish Halle Mission, the Leipzig Evangelical Lutheran Mission and the Swedish Mission. But it's a church with a three-century mission history, dating back to 1707 when German Protestant missionaries dedicated the Jerusalem Church, the first chapel to be set up in the coastal town of Tranquebar, at the time a Danish colony. This was followed by the first Tamil translation of the New Testament in 1711 and its printing two years later.
