AGC MA AT WORK FOR YOU
Welcome AGC MA New Board Members

The Associated General Contractors of Massachusetts (AGC MA) is pleased to welcome the addition of three new board members: Briana Colantonio, Business Development and Marketing Specialist, Colantonio, Inc., Diana Hasan, Human Resource Director, C.E. Floyd Company Inc., and Richard Jensen, Vice President, Director of Operations, Erland Construction, Inc.

Diana will serve three years until 2024, while Briana and Richard serve in designated Board seats for their role as Chair of the Building Women in Construction Committee and Chair of the Open Shop Council, respectively.

The Board of Directors is the formal oversight entity governing all activities of AGC MA. It gives strategic direction to the Association, including providing policy guidance, managing Association finances, and approving the annual budget. Their leadership informs the priorities of the Association and helps push the industry forward into the future.

The Board of Directors meets a minimum of six times a year, receiving reports from the Executive Committee, Staff, and AGC committees. The Board acts on recommendations from the Executive Committee, and from all standing and ad hoc committees and task forces.

The three new members join a 15-member board that represent a wide array of skills and experiences. View the full list of AGC MA board of Directors here

AGC MA Wishes Everyone a Happy and Safe Juneteenth

This is the first year that June 19th known as Juneteenth is an official state holiday in the Commonwealth. The Juneteenth holiday commemorates the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union Army General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas which was the last Confederate states to come under Union control. One of the first large-scale Juneteenth celebrations began in Boston in the 1990's as the Roxbury Pride Day Juneteenth Celebration. A day of remembrance and reflection, Juneteenth events will be held this year throughout Massachusetts. A list of Boston-area Juneteenth events can be found here.

June is National Pride Month

Pride month celebrates the diversity of LGBTQ+ individuals. Looking for jobsite resources? A Tool Box Talk on LGBTQ+ inclusion is available from the AGC of Washington here.

Building Material Prices Beginning to Fall

As the entire industry has dealt with uncertainty regarding material pricing, the AGC MA hosted a successful webinar entitled "Managing The Risk of Labor and Material Shortages and Cost Escalation". Attorneys Ken Rubinstein of Preti Flaherty and Stan Martin of Commonsense Construction Law provided insight into ways contractors can protect themselves and insulate their bids from price fluctuations.

Fortunately, material prices now appear poised to be headed in a more favorable direction for contractors.  The Wall Street Journal reported that lumber prices are falling at the fastest rate on record after a similarly steep runup. Major logging and lumber company executives are selling off personally held shares in a sign that they feel the bubble has popped.

Similarly, copper prices fell to their lowest level in months as the Chinese government gave signals that they might release strategic stockpiles to limit consumer inflation. Copper is considered an indicator for other metals, but eyes will remain on the price of steel where the stock index has doubled since last year. Experts anticipate prices for steel will fall somewhat but remain elevated above average.

AGC MA Safety Services

With the end of the statewide mask mandates on May 29th, AGC heard from many of our members regarding how they intended to handle masks on jobsites moving forward. AGC MA Safety Director Chris Ziegler and others weighed in on what they felt was the most logical path forward for the industry and people in the field.

On May 27th, AGC CEO John Ferrante provided a notice to all members on the general industry consensus. See the statement on the industry consensus put out by AGC MA here.

On June 10th, U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh announced that the long-anticipated federal COVID-19 Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will only apply to healthcare settings. This represents a significant change from early reports that the new standard would apply to a broad range of industries, including construction.

In addition, the AGC Safety Committee has identified some additional consideration as members look towards the future of COVID safety protocols. These include:
  • Air circulation and ventilation plan
  • CO2 monitoring plan
  • Internal updates and information to employees
  • Maintaining distance in communal areas
  • COVID-19 breakout plan
  • Asking workers questions in regards to COVID-19 vaccinations (workers have the right to not answer questions verbally or on paper.)

If you have any questions or would like for AGC MA Safety Services to conduct a site safety inspection, please contact Chris Ziegler.

Other services available:
  • OSHA 10 and 30 Hour Training
  • Safety Program consultations/review
  • Job Site Safety Walk Through/Inspections
  • Lunch & learns focusing on Silica, Fall Protection, Trenching and Scaffolding
