Notes from the Headmaster
Dear Families,
This email comes to you on a day designated for celebration. On the first Spirit Day of the school year, we find our spirits saddened and tested by the impact of the long, continued trial on our community. Though we are thankful we can take the steps necessary to keep our students safe, it is appropriate to mourn the conditions that have made these steps a necessity. It is these very same conditions that have put physical space between so many of us, and which continue to strain all of us and your loved ones in innumerable ways. Since March, we have together been jostled and tossed by the waves that the year 2020 has brought us. As the impacts of this trial continues, we must ask what exactly it is we are celebrating on this first Spirit Day of the year?
It cannot be a celebration of the calm or the pleasant. Our students are constantly immersed in the timeline of history, in the great tales of men and women of old, and in the authentic, human experience found in our rich literature. If we give heed to what our students are learning, we cannot believe the world always has, or always will, exist in a state of placidity. Times of trial inevitably come, and this year continues to prove itself to be such a time.
Earlier today, I had to do so some reflection as we prepared to say the Athenian Pledge. I took note of the group of 5th graders on the field – our first Kindergarten class – finally realized as full-grown Athenians. I thought of our students learning at home from all grade levels, who were remotely broadcasting and participating in the ceremony. I noted the glaring, silent absence of the 2nd grade class, who yesterday recited the pledge with fervor and cheer. These questions came to mind. What does it mean to be a community? What does it mean to be an Athenian? What is the true spirit of Spirit Day?
Like a friendship, it is easy to celebrate camaraderie when hardships are absent. Yet, the absence of conflict is not the mark of a true friendship. It is precisely the presence of and perseverance through conflict that forges a lasting friend. Like a friendship, this community will prove itself to be the true Athenian community that it is as we face these present trials. The essence of the Athenian Spirit comes out not in leisure, or games, or festivities. These things are important. But they are first and foremost signs. They represent and celebrate the reality. The reality that there exists something that transcends all of us that we are wholeheartedly and fully committed to. That we must strive above and beyond ourselves to seek after the Truth, to live for the Good, and to exemplify the Beautiful. That as we face the hard realities of the present, we see these as stepping stones towards true peace and true joy. I will leave us, fellow Athenians, on this Spirit Day in 2020, with the words of the Athenians Pledge:
We, Athenians, will never bring disgrace to this our Academy by any act of dishonesty or cowardice, nor ever desert our fellow Scholars. We will stand for the ideals and principles of our Academy both alone and as a community of learners. We will respect the Academy’s Virtues of Humility, Courage, Honesty, Perseverance, Responsibility, Friendship, Integrity, and Wisdom. We will do our best to incite a respect and reverence toward these Virtues among our fellow Scholars. We will strive unceasingly to quicken our sense of Citizenship. Thus in all these ways we will transmit this Academy greater and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us.
With Devotion,
Stephen Philabaum
Headmaster
