We are pleased to announce the Alaska State Council on the Arts has received $421,500 from the National Endowment for the Arts through the CARES Act. We are grateful to the NEA for this funding that ASCA will re-grant in order to save jobs and prevent arts organizations from closing their doors.
At the same time, we know losses are greater than the amount of available relief funding. In the context of ASCA’s budget, CARES funds are less than the total FY20 operating support grants ($438,000) to arts organizations. In the context of arts organizations across the state and their overall operating budgets combined at 47.5 million, ASCA’s contribution represents less than 1%.
For some, CARES funding means one more month to meet payroll or rent, the ability to pay overdue bills and contractual obligations, or a thin slice of revenue lost from canceled events and fundraisers. We hope this modest amount of funding, in coordination with other sources, helps leverage other fund sources, buys time for organizations to adapt and arts leaders to make decisions about an uncertain future, rather than the future determining the outcome.
We understand in this long game, a multi-faceted approach is necessary for a recovery of Alaska’s arts sector. As we plan for FY21, we are taking a close look at a wide range of resources for individual artists, volunteers, patrons, consumers, and industry partners that all have a vital role in our quality of life and the economic well-being of our state.
We invite you to continue this conversation and share your perspective, needs, and experiences through our survey. We hope you will have the opportunity to pause and enjoy the warm Alaska sunshine.

Statewide Artists Invited to Respond to Concept of RESILIENCE
-
Resilience was originally intended to be a juried exhibition of visual art only open to Interior Alaskan artists and held in the Wandering Bear Gallery. However, given the concept and the current context, we want to make space for a larger dialogue around the arts and resilience. Therefore, we invite statewide artists working in various disciplines to submit work responding to the concept in this online exhibition.

Honoring the Creativity of Alaska's Children and Youth
I
t has no doubt been a challenging end of school year for Alaskans, and as spring arrives and heads into summer, we wanted to take a moment to honor the young artists whose creativity is our future. Alaskan children and youth have achieved much beauty, thoughtfulness, discipline and learning in the arts in the 2020-21 school year, and we hope you will take the time to see our state and the world through their eyes. We are also grateful to all the teachers, administrators, family members and appreciators of student art, always. Thank you all for inspiring and connecting us through your work!
Though we are only able to share a few examples of student artwork, below, we hope you will share more examples of student achievement in the arts with the Alaska State Council on the Arts! If you would like us to post about a student exhibition, showcase, or other examples you can email the Arts Education Program Director at
laura.forbes@alaska.gov
. We’ll excited to share links to stories and websites on our Facebook page at @ArtsAlaska. We hope you have a creative and sunshine-filled summer!
- The Alaska School Activities Association recognizes student achievement in Visual Art, Music and Drama, Debate, Forensics, statewide. In February, ASAA was able to bring students together in Juneau for Drama, Debate and Forensics competition, and you can visit the results of that event here. Though the spring Solo and Ensemble All-State Music Festival had to be cancelled in May, you can revisit the November All-State Music Festival, here.
While we know this list represents only a small portion of the achievements of Alaska students of the arts, we are truly inspired by the creativity, passion and vision of the children and youth in all of Alaska. We hope you will share stories and highlights of young artists’ work in your community!
