Long Beach City College Alumni Newsletter
February 2020

Message from the Assistant Director,
Alumni Development

"I spent my boyhood behind the barbed wire fences of American internment camps and that part of my life is something that I wanted to share with more people."   George Takei

On February 6th, students returned for the Spring Semester and things are already off and running at LBCC.  The LBCC Foundation, in partnership with Long Beach City College, is proud to bring back Long Beach Reads One Book after a six year hiatus.  We welcome actor, author and social justice activist George Takei to our Liberal Arts campus on March 19th where he will discuss his New York Times Bestselling graphic novel "They Call Us Enemy."  We are so excited to be a part of bringing back this impactful program to the Long Beach community.

At the Alumni office we are thrilled to be a part of the 17th Annual Hall of Champions, recognizing LBCC Alumni who have contributed to the outstanding accomplishments of the LBCC Athletic program.  Join us on March 20th as we celebrate our outstanding alumni.  We are also excited to see nominations come in for our 2020 Alumni Hall of Fame!  Please take a moment to think of a deserving alum and nominate them for this special honor.

The Journalism Department is hosting an upcoming alumni gathering this spring.  Join current students, alumni, faculty and staff as they gather in the newly renovated P Building on May 8th.   Last, but not least, don't forget to check out February's "Campus Community" newsletter that will fill you in on all of the latest campus news.

Until Next Month,

Go Vikings!

Journalism Alumni Reunion

The Long Beach City College Journalism Program will host a reunion Friday, May 8, to continue the historic tradition, reunite, show off the new area, give away plaques from decades gone by, further develop a mentorship program for current students and collect funds for a scholarship.

Current students, alumni, faculty and staff will gather in the newly renovated Journalism-English P Building, historic P113 Lounge, P135 high-tech journalism office, P134 computer lab and courtyard at
4901 E. Carson St., Long Beach.

The event begins at 5 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

A brief program will be presented at 6:30 and the reunion will conclude at 8 p.m.

Organizers are spreading the word to students from any class since the college opened in 1927, not just City magazine and Viking news. Former or current journalistic coworkers, professionals, colleagues and others who might be interested are also welcome to attend.

A Facebook page will further promote the event and participants are encouraged to use Twitter and other social media to reconnect with fellow alumni.

Further information is available by contacting former journalism program coordinator Patrick McKean at [email protected]
