Kodiak ROAR, February 27, 2020
Fifth grade girls met with a representative from Girls Who Code, an international nonprofit that aims to close the gender gap in technology. Jessica Capers chatted with the students about what they are learning in Computer Science. According to Girls Who Code, while girls' participation in computer science ebbs over time, the biggest drop off happens between the ages of 13-17.
ROAR: Reminders
No School: Friday, February 28, 2020
A reminder that there is no school on Friday, February 28, 2020, as it's a Professional Day for teachers to plan and prepare for upcoming Upper School Experience-Centered Seminars, Middle School Seminars, and Children's School Colorado Expeditions.
Upper School ECS Students Mentor Younger Students
Upper School students met recently with their buddies in the Children's School to mentor them on the topics and destinations they will be exploring for their Experience-Centered Seminars (ECS), which kick-off Monday. After the three-week seminars, students will be sharing with their buddies what they learned.

This year's seminars are Bonaire: Evolution on an Ocean Planet; La influencia mora en EspaƱa: Language immersion in Granada, Spain; Power to the People: How You Ca n Change the World; Studio Glass: Emergence of a New American Art Form; Storytelling Through Film;
and Wilderness Emergency Medicine On Santa Cruz Island, California.

ECSs immerse students in academic subjects through a hands-on, interdisciplinary approach. They demand direct, active participation and primary research in an environment outside of the classroom. Academic requirements include oral and written presentations, term papers, group work and projects, or final exams. Follow along with this year's ECSs on our social media channels and here through ECS blogs, which will be written by students

Dessert Theatre: 2nd and 4th Grades Perform Next Week
Please join us on Friday, March 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. the Louisa Performing Arts Center to support our young thespians! Free and open to the public.

2nd Grade Performance:
The Spelling B-R-A-I-N.  Three students, along with their brains, are getting ready for the 35th Annual Newton Elementary School Spelling Bee! Jessica is nervous and has never won before. Becky is overly confident. And Lloyd quit the baseball team to study the words. We follow how each student's brain functions while they prepare for the bee, from the Occipital Lobe who perceives everything to the Prefrontal Cortex who seems to forget what happened 30 seconds ago! When Lloyd's subconscious is woken up during meditation, he is determined to win the spelling bee. Will the other brains let him? Come to the bee to find out!

4th Grade Performance:
The 4th graders will present an evening of Revolutionary War Tales.  Katie's Trunk  is about a family who is loyal to King George, but some friends of theirs do not like this and ransack their home. They find a girl from the family hidden. What will they do with her? In  A Guide for George Washington , a Patriot brother of two sisters is captured by the British. The sisters are left to disguise themselves as boys and guide General Washington to cross the Delaware themselves. In  The Bratton Resistance,  a family is charged with hiding Patriot gunpowder in their home. A British Spy finds out. Sure enough, the family lights the gunpowder just in time to scare the British. Now, "It's time" to end the show with "The Plan" from Paul Revere. A comical bit you are sure to laugh at!

Upcoming Dessert Theatre Performances:

Kindergarten and 1st
March 19, 2020, 4:00 p.m.
Louisa Performing Arts Center

Why do we do Dessert Theatre?
The discipline of Theatre enables a child to become more in tune with his/her own unique attributes and gifts. Children are free to identify and solve problems within the rehearsal process, promoting their intellectual curiosity. They grow in their ability to express ideas clearly, helping to build confidence in their own communication skills. Theatre is a truly collaborative art form where children learn to be responsible for themselves and others. This social cooperation reinforces and motivates positive behavior, building personal integrity. The very process of developing a character challenges the child to see the world from a different point of view and teaches him/her how to bring intellect and emotion together. Plus, the art of presenting theatre engages whole minds through the genuine application of literacy and the integration of knowledge across the curriculum.

Girls' Varsity Basketball Continues in District Playoffs
Congrats to the girls' varsity basketball team for Tuesday's victory in the district playoff opener! The Kodiaks downed the Fountain Valley Danes 54-18 at Tutt Field House. The attack came from all positions, lead by Bailey R. (11), Sarina M. (11), Mia C. (10), and Whitney R. (8). Kate G. and Alair F. each found the rim for 5 points, while freshmen Cameron R. and Cailan R. added a bucket each. Bailey R. collected a double-double tonight with an additional 11 rebounds.

Next Game
Girls' varsity next plays at 12:30 p.m. Friday, February 28, against Peyton at the City Auditorium, 221 E. Kiowa St., in downtown Colorado Springs. Let's go, Kodiaks!

Boys' Varsity Basketball Wraps Up
Congrats to the boys' varsity basketball team for its district playoff Wednesday against Thomas
MacLaren.  Trailing 18-25 at the half, the Kodiaks were still within striking range even after a rough start and early foul trouble. But the second-half momentum belonged to the Highlanders from Thomas Maclaren who ran away with the 64-37 win. CSS struggled to find the rim with 2 for 28 from behind the arc, and defensively could not alter the Highlander long-range shooters who knocked down a bounty of three-pointers. Overall, the boys played hard but out of sync and ran into a team that finished on the offensive end, took better care of the ball, and scrapped for each rebound.

Senior Luke T. led the CSS attack with 19 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals while Spencer B. '20 tallied 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists while scrapping at both ends of the court. Senior Kyle J. collected 6 boards and 2 steals while adding 3 points. Freshman Andrew H. found the bucket for 5 points and added 3 assists and 2 steals. James H. '22 contributed a trey along with 2 steals. This loss concludes the season for the 10-10 Kodiaks who finished 3-4 in Black Forest League play.

Kindergarten Students Learn About Composting
Kindergarten students met with Green Team members this week to learn how to sort their lunch waste. Kylie C. '20, Autumn C. '20, and Kate G '20 had food scraps and other items available so kindergartners could practice sorting what goes in the trash and what goes in compost. They learned tips such as if it can go in your tummy, then it's compost! It's part of an effort by the Green Team Upper School Club to educate students about composting. CSS began composting on campus earlier  this month.

Green compost bins are in Maytag Dining Hall and El Pomar Academic Center lounges and bathrooms for food waste and certain paper products such as napkins and bags. The pilot program to help reduce waste will educate and evaluate composting on campus with the goal to expand it by placing bins in all bathrooms and dining areas. Click here for a list of compostable items.

Middle School Matchwits Season Underway
Congratulations to our Middle School Matchwits team! The season kicked off Monday. Our A team, made up of 8th graders Alex H. '24, Adhista E. '24, Micah R. '24, and Oliver P. '24, are in first place in the Black Forest League.

Our B team also had a great night. Members are Elliot P. '26, Imogen M. '24, Wyatt N. '26, and 5th graders, Abraham B. '27, and Lawrence G. '27, for part of the time. They all did a fantastic job, and their team is currently in 10th place out of 21 teams.

And for the first time ever, we had a team made up of all 5th graders: Langley F. '27, Graham M. '27, Charlotte P. '27, and Lawrence G. '27 and Abraham B. '27 for part of the time. They did an amazing job! Their scores don't officially count in the rankings, but as a team, they would have actually been in 4th place based on points!

Way to go, Matchwits! The next competition is scheduled for March 9, 2020, in Simla.
3rd Graders Create Solar System Models
Third graders are out of this world! They created models of the solar system, and each student focused on one planet to research. On Friday, students displayed the models and gave presentations about their planet. Parents, grandparents, and other students in the Children's School attended.
