Spring 2020 Newsletter for Nevada County Habitat Homeowners
A Habitat Home Leads to Homeownership in the Next Generation

Jody Veerkamp and her three children moved into their Habitat house in June of 2003. All three of her children grew up in the house, and learned the benefits of stable homeownership firsthand. The kids also loved visiting their grandfather’s place, where he had several acres and the kids could roam around and enjoy their grandpa’s animals.

After Jody’s daughter Molly got married, she and her husband yearned for a home to buy, preferably with some land. Molly’s husband Steven had sold a house and had some money toward a down payment, but not enough. By this point Jody was living alone in her Habitat home. Molly made a proposal to Jody – could the couple move in with Jody, help with her payments and save up money for a house of their own?

Jody said, “Yes,” and two and a half years later Molly and Steven moved into a house with some land off of Lime Kiln Road.

Like so many Habitat homeowners, Jody felt secure that her home would always be a place where her children could count on as a base, no matter where they were.

“We had some challenges, but everyone got through them and Molly and Steven are delighted to be raising their sons in a home that reminds Molly of her grandfather’s place,” says Jody. “I love seeing them all there.”
Meet the Bookkeeper
Lisa Hooper has been with Nevada County Habitat for Humanity for 10 years. She loves the Habitat mission of home ownership. Keeping the financial books in order and interacting with homeowners, staff and volunteers make her days joyful.

Before joining the Habitat staff, Lisa had a 10-year career in aeronautical engineering. She left that position to be home with her children while they grew. She was very active in their schools, organizing the festivals and creating the school newsletter.

Lisa loves to hike and backpack, swimming in the cold lakes she comes across. And she is always up for a board game. Being a 20-year homeowner in the same house also means her biggest pastime might be upkeep of the house and yard!
