Whether to major or minor in music? Then come to Ms. Swift's Beyond the Staff! The topic will be: Music in College . There will be time after the presentation to ask Ms. Swift any questions.

All SDYS students and families are invited to this workshop. Cookies and juice will be provided.
Musical Artstops
San Diego Museum of Art
Sunday, March 22, 1pm-4pm

Would you like an opportunity to perform at the San Diego Museum of Art, learn about the connections between art and music, and engage with museum goers? In collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA), students in Sinfonia, Wind Symphony, or Ovation are eligible to apply for Musical Artstops. Students will have the opportunity to present a 10-minute performance centering around works of art at SDMA.

Participating students are required to go to the Museum of Art and select their top three pieces of art at their own convenience. Your top three selections will need to then be submitted to Anna by March 6, 2020.

On Sunday, March 15, Inspiration and Showcase ensembles will be performing in concert at Copley Symphony Hall in Downtown San Diego. There will be a dress rehearsal at Copley Symphony Hall prior to the concert. As a reminder, any student who misses the dress rehearsal cannot perform in the concert. It is SDYS policy that all students watch fellow musicians and stay for the whole concert.

SDYS is in need of a few parents on Saturday mornings from 8:00-8:30 am to help with rehearsal room set up, as well as a few parents on Sunday evenings, 5:00-5:30 pm to help with room break down.

We are in need of 1-2 parent volunteers to assist with setting up our ChIMES early childhood classes. We have colorful floor mat pieces that need to be laid out for our kids (ages 0-5) and parents to sit on, tables and chairs that need to be rearranged, and supplies to be carried in and out.

Would you like to be a guest performer for young children ages 0-5 and their caregivers? SDYS is seeking Conservatory musicians to be featured during a Friday or Saturday ChIMES music class in Balboa Park. Play a short piece of your choice, as well as a classic kid favorite: Twinkle Twinkle? Itsy Bitsy Spider?

Guest performers needed on these dates:
FRIDAYS: 2/21, 2/28, 3/6
SATURDAYS: 2/22*, 2/29, 3/7

Time slots are approximately:

"ChIMES Greatest Hits" 1-Day Seasonal Workshop
Join us on Friday, March 13 or Saturday, March 14 as we break out all of our favorite songs and activities from the past year into one fun-filled class. From popular kids songs to classical, our "greatest hits" will have your family singing, moving and making music together. Plus, enjoy a special craft time with your child, where you can make your own musical instrument to take home!
ChIMES Spring 2020 Session: "All About Animals" (8 weeks, March - May)
Join us as we explore all kinds of amazing animals through song, dance, movement and instrument play - from springtime birds, bugs and insects to zoo, jungle and farm animals. There are class options for babies, toddlers and preschoolers on both Friday and Saturday mornings.

ChIMES (Childhood Introduction to Music Education, with Smiles!) is an SDYS program that highlights one of the most integral phases of child growth and development: the period from birth to age 5. Interactive classes incorporate singing, movement, rhythm activities and hands-on instrument play to develop children's musical, motor and aural skills, and help facilitate learning in other areas.

Jordan Kuspa , cello Teaching Artist, recently won the Garth Newel International Composition Competition. The prize is a premiere of his piece, Collideoscope, by the Garth Newel Piano Quartet, along with a residency at the Garth Newel Music Center in August, 2020. You can read the article here . Program Information
Dmitri Shostakovich’s cinematic retelling of the ill-fated Russian Revolution of 1905 offers hope to “the people who have stopped believing because the cup of evil has run over.” Filled with student protest songs, this became one of his most popular pieces since the Leningrad Symphony of World War II. Our evening opens with the San Diego Symphony debut of acclaimed violinist Stefan Jackiw in Ludwig van Beethoven’s heroic Violin Concerto.
This concert is part of the San Diego Symphony's season-long celebration of Beethoven's 250th birthday.
Heart of a Child Benefit Concert Audition

The 9th annual “Heart of a Child” benefit concert will be held the evening of Saturday, April 25, 2020 .  Resounding Joy is looking for truly exceptional musicians in San Diego to perform at the concert. This year’s concert will be held at the newly completed Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. Their 500-seat Baker- Baum Auditorium is San Diego’s newest world class concert hall. All proceeds will go to Resounding Joy’s Music with Heart Program providing care at Rady Children’s Hospital. Video auditions are currently being accepted for soloists and small groups. Auditions are best submitted by YouTube, Vimeo or personal website. The deadline to submit a video audition is February 28. Video clip links can be sent to jmiller@resoundingjoyinc.org for review by the selection committee. Please include full name, age, hometown or neighborhood of San Diego, school, and significant accomplishments. All personal information will be kept confidential. We accept performers of all different musical genres from kindergarten through college.
