Save the date!! I encourage all to be at the National Steeplechase Museum in Camden on Saturday, February 8 at 6:00 PM. Darby Dan Farm's John Phillips will be our guest speaker. Aberdeen Catery will once again provide a great meal preceeded by a social hour. Following the talk, our Annual Awards will be presented.

John Phillips to Speak at Annual Meeting
The South Carolina Owners and Breeders Association will hold its Annual Banquet on February 8, 2020 at the National Steeplechase Museum in Camden at 6:00 PM. We will be honored to have John Phillips, owner of Darby Dan Farm in Kentucky as our guest speaker.
John Phillips purchased the current Darby Dan Farm in Lexington in 1992 from family members. Noted standouts for the Phillips Racing Partnership include Memories of Silver and the 1999 Breeders; Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Soaring Softly. Phillips is the grandson of John W. Galbreath, the founder of Darby Dan Farm in Ohio in 1935.
Darby Dan Farm is also a stallion station standing nine stallions.
Phillips was elected President of The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance for 2020 by the board of directors. He has been a member of the board since 2016 and also served as President in 2018.

Racing Across the Nation
Between November 25 and December 20, South Carolina farms and training centers saw 7 graduates cross the finish line first in stakes races.
On November 25, Saint Alfred, who has spent time at both the Elloree Training Center and the Webb Carroll Training Center during his career, captured the Mass Bred Championship Handicap at Finger Lakes. Having only one beat early on (8 of 9), he was three to four wide throughout, making the lead inside the 1/8
th
pole and won by a ½ length.
Firenze Fire brought his lifetime earnings to $1,691,750 following his victory in the Fabulous Strike Stakes at Penn National on November 27. Firenze Fire was the overwhelming favorite and showed why taking the lead at the 5/16's pole. Surging to the front, he quickly sprinted clear crossing the line 4 1/2 lengths in front of the field in a hand ride. This colt is a product of Travis Durr's program at the Webb Carroll Training Center.
On the same day at Penn National, another Webb Carroll Training Center grad, Precious, was 3 lengths best in the Blue Mountain Juvenile Fillies Stakes. Trailing early on, she accelerated entering the turn and passed all by the time she had reached the 1/16'th pole.
The 2-year-old filly Angle of Attack made it two in a row being best in the Eleanor Casey Memorial Stakes at Charles Town on November 30. Stalking the leader to the top of the stretch, Angle of Attack then dug in and in a battle to the wire, proved best by a head. This filly is a product of Randy and Kala Rentz's program at Rentz Farm.
Spanish Point, who went through the breaking process at Wilhelmina and Fred McEwan's Fenwick Farm, has raced twice as a 2-year-old. She broke her maiden at Belmont Park in September before becoming a stakes winner at Gulfstream Park on November 30 following the House Party Stakes. Prominent early on, she gained the lead before the ½ mile pole and under steady urging, held her advantage to the wire. She won by 1 ¾ lengths.
Lewisfield gained his fourth lifetime stakes victory in the Howard and Sondra Bender Memorial Stakes at Laurel Park on December 7. A graduate of Franklin "Goree" Smith's program at the Elloree Training Center, he quickly moved to the lead and while under steady pressure, prevailed by a neck.
Mitchell Road, a half-sister to 2019 Kentucky Derby winner, Country House, broke on top and never looked back in the My Charmer Stakes at Gulfstream Park on December 14. Mitchell Road learned her early lessons at the Webb Carroll Training Center as did Country House.

British Idiom Eclipse Award Finalist
British Idiom, winner of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita, has been named as a finalist in the 2-year-old Female division. This filly by
Flashback broke her maiden in her debut at Saratoga on August 15. She then won the Darley Alcibiades S.-GI at Keeneland on October 4 before capturing the Breeders' Cup race on November 2.
Stuart Grant's The Elkstone Group LLC is a member of the partnership that owns
British Idiom.
Another 2-year-old finalist with a South Carolina connection is
Structor. This son of
Palace Malice, campaigned by Cot Campbell's Dogwood Stable, captured the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-GI remaining unbeaten in three career starts.
Structor is owned by Jeff Drown and Don Rachel. He is trained by Chad Brown
The Eclipse Award winners will be announced on January 23 at Gulfstream Park.

Concrete Rose Named 2019 Aiken-Trained Horse of the Year
The Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum has named Concrete Rose as the 2019 Aiken-Trained Horse of the Year. In 2019, Concrete Rose earned $1,041,900.
As a yearling and leading up to the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale of 2-year-olds-in training, this filly was under the care of Justin Wojzynski. Concrete Rose sold under his White Pine Thoroughbreds banner. She is now owned by Ashbrook Farm and BBN Racing. She is trained by Rusty Arnold.
In 2019, Concrete Rose won two Grade I stakes - the Belmont Invitational Stakes and the Saratoga Oaks Invitational. In her other two starts in 2019 year, she won two Grade III stakes - the Florida Oaks at Tampa Bay and the Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Prior Aiken-trained Horse of the Year honoree's include Congoree, Wando, Limehouse, Bob and John, Country Star, Midshipman, Quality Road, It's Tricky, Alpha, Palace Malice, Curalina, Dickinson and Still Having Fun.

The Future Of Horse Racing Is Now
Over the past several years, groups of horseman have been getting together to try to revitalize our horse racing industry. Our time has come.
We have met with legislators and Southern Strategy Group, a lobbyist group who can help us reach our goals. Taking the lead on legislation is the only way to be assured that horse racing will be included in sports betting, and it will be written the way WE want it.

Lady's Island, winner of the Sugar Swirl S.-GIII at Gulfstream Park on December 14.
Lady's Island, a daughter of Greatness, is out of the
Broad Brush mare
Broadway Martha. She is a registered Florida-bred. Owned by Matties Racing and Averill Racing, she is trained by Georgina Baxter.
Lady's Island has career earnings of $384,795. She won eight races in 2019 including the Nicole's Dream S. and Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint, both at Gulfstream Park.
Franklin "Goree" Smith's South Carolina-bred
Sweet Home Dixie won her fourth race in a row on December 26 at Laurel Park. By the leading South Carolina stallion
Done Talking, she is out of
Overdue Slew by
Slew City Slew.
Sweet Home Dixie is owned by Goree and trained by his brother, Hammy Smith.

The South Carolina Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association thanks all who have supported the organization over the years. We are proud not only of the farms and training centers, but also of the many individuals who contribute to the racing industry and the many horse disciplines in our state.
