NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS

"Hay bales and rubber duckies might sprout in Westville, as city planners ponder closing the short block of Central Avenue between Whalley and Fountain to create a one-block pedestrian plaza or piazza.  That possibility emerged Wednesday night at the regular monthly Westville/West Hills Community Community Management Team meeting that drew 40 people and officials to the cafeteria of the  Mauro-Sheridan Interdistrict Magnet School  on Fountain Street..." MEET THE PROBOSCOID FROM PLANET RHINOPLAST
February 18, 2020, The New Haven Independent, by Thomas Breen- "Gar Waterman may have called the piece Proboscoid from the Planet Rhinoplast, in honor of a certain nasal prominence that emerges from the work. But the piece is far from extraterrestrial. Waterman sourced it from Fair Haven, and from New Haven's own long industrial history. On Sunday Waterman and artist Tom Edwards were on hand at Kehler Liddell Gallery to open their current shows - Edwards's "Dreams and Shadows" and Waterman's "Pattern Language" - which run at the Westville gallery through March 15. To a packed house, the two artists explained that the process behind the pieces were sometimes an adventure in themselves." Click HERE to comment and read full article.

CALL TO ARTISTS FOR GROUP SHOW @KLG
"I Am ..." - 4th Annual Juried Show - Open Call to Artists. How do you see yourself? How do others see you? What makes you, you? From selfies to personal branding to the complexities of identity politics, our carefully crafted personas are routinely broadcast to the world via the internet. The modern world revels in the revelation of a semblance of self, allowing us to conceal as much as we reveal. In this age of unprecedented exposure, how can an artist offer some fresh statement of self? While navigating the boundaries between the social and the private self, how do you publicly express something real and authentic? We invite you to share some aspect of the true you, whether through a traditional version of self portraiture or some other, less conventional window to your soul. We want to know you and see you as you see yourself. We welcome any media or form of self expression in your expression of self, anticipating that this collection of selves, of I AM, will become a powerful, revelatory voice of WE ARE. DEADLINE TO SUBMIT: Sunday, March 15th by 11:59pm. FULL DETAILS HERE

ARTSPACE COMMISSIONED PROJECTS OPEN CALL ANNOUNCED
"Artspace invites Connecticut-based artists, designers and thinkers to submit proposals for projects that advance public awareness of how our city is run and what governance looks like by moving their practices out of the studio and into the public sphere.  We seek proposals that imagine opportunities for artists to play innovative and generative roles alongside city officials, employees, volunteers and residents as observers, analysts, strategists, contributors, collaborators, interns, educators, poets and storytellers.   Submissions may describe a dream artist-residency within a specific city department (see list below), or be designed to help address an overlooked gap, need or promise..." I AM SHAKESPEARE FILM SCREENING AND DISCUSSION @MITCHELL LIBRARY

Stephen Dest's documentary I AM SHAKESPEARE: The Henry Green Story chronicles the true life story of 19 year old, Henry Green, living a dual life as a brilliant young actor and inner-city gang member, who was brutally shot and left for dead just shortly after his inspiring performance in Shakespeare's  "Romeo & Juliet"  and his remarkable (less than 1% chance of survival) recovery/intestinal transplant received by a 13 year old boy (Jack) who was killed in a car accident on the other side of the country but who still managed to save Henry's life.

New Haven resident and writer/director of this film was the recipient of the 2012 "Artist of the Year" (Filmmaker) awarded by the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. Mr. Dest is founder/head of the Drama Department at Neighborhood Music School , and a professor of Film Studies at University of Connecticut.

*This event is co-sponsored by The Westville Village Renaissance Alliance.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF JEWISH CALCUTTA

Jael Silliman, who was born in Calcutta, will lead a discussion about that Jewish community and the current exhibition, Sanjeet Chowdhury, Photographs of Jewish Calcutta. She has written on Jewish Calcutta, including Jewish Portraits, Indian Frames: Women's Narratives from a Diaspora of Hope, about four generations of her family. Silliman recently developed the digital archive
Recalling Jewish Calcutta.  Although only about twenty Jews currently reside in Kolkata (as it is now known), the city retains the traces of Jewish culture. Many monuments, including a cemetery in North Kolkata, where gravestones are occasionally written in three languages, remain and are cared for by non-Jewish Bengalis, many of them Muslims. Nahoum's, the Jewish bakery, remains one of the city's favorites.

Sanjeet Chowdhury's photographs illustrate the diversity, poignancy and history of this Jewish culture. An independent photographer, filmmaker, and curator committed to representing the everyday, he is based in Kolkata. His photographic works have been exhibited in London, New York, Basel, and other cities worldwide.

A NATIONWIDE CRISIS: MISSIN
MURDERED INDIGENOUS WOMEN GIRLS

Kim Weston, like other Native Americans across North America, is standing up to bring awareness to the crisis of the missing and murdered indigenous women and girls.  Here in the United States 5,712 are on record for being missing or murdered.  Another 10,000 have been reported in Canada.

Kim Weston is working   on an installation piece that will include 15,000 prayer bundles for the "Visionary New England" exhibition slated for the deCordova Sculpture Park & Museum this Spring 2020.  Your hands are needed to help create these red bundles. Each bundle is filled with tobacco and represents a prayer for these women and girls. This is a great opportunity to learn a Native American tradition and make a difference in the lives of the women, girls and their families. Every bundle counts. Every prayer is needed.
