Deadline Reminders

2020 Pacifica and Southwest California Synod Assembly
May 28 - 30, 2020
California Lutheran University

With gratitude for those who have gone before and hope for the future, the ELCA gives thanks to God for the ministry of women. In 2019 and 2020 we celebrate 50 years of Lutheran women being ordained in the United States, 40 years of women of color being ordained, and 10 years of LGBTQIA+ individuals being able to serve freely.

We are church together for the sake of the world.
This year, Pacifica Synod and Southwest California Synod will celebrate their synod assemblies together on the campus of our university, California Lutheran. Expect to be encouraged and inspired by ministries we are already doing together and dream of where God is calling us to future endeavors. Congregations and members will register in their respective synods but most sessions and workshops will be united.  Join us for this historic event.

Pre-assembly activities will take place on Thursday, May 28.
Business will begin Friday morning, May 29 and conclude
on Saturday, May 30 by noon.

Information about the joint activities and scheduled events may be found on our  joint SWCA and Pacifica Synod Assembly page.

Information specific to Pacifica Synod may be found here as it becomes available.

Call for Memorials for 2020 Pacifica & SWCA Synod Joint Assembly
Memorials and resolutions enable our Churchwide Organization to address broad policy issues or issues important to God's mission in the world.

Memorials  address broad policy issues, while  resolutions  have a narrower focus, requesting consideration or action by individual offices, units, or the Church Council. A Memorials Committee, appointed by the ELCA Church Council, receives memorials from synod assemblies and makes appropriate recommendations for assembly action. The Memorials Committee meets after all synod assemblies are over and approximately six to eight weeks before a Churchwide Assembly .

In 2020, the Southwest California and Pacifica Synods will hold a joint assembly on the campus of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, expressing that "we are church together for the sake of the world." In that spirit, both synods will accept memorials for consideration at a joint business session. The assembly will be held on the campus of California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks from May 28 to May 30, 2020.

Resolutions will not be considered at the 2020 Joint Assembly, but may be submitted to the SWCA or Pacifica Synod Councils as allowed by each synod's respective constitutions. Submission of resolutions for consideration as assembly business will resume with the assembly following 2020's Joint Assembly.

Memorials for consideration at synod assembly are due no later than Friday, February 28, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. , and should be emailed to [email protected]  AND mailed to the Joint Committee on Reference and Counsel, c/o Samantha Henderson, at the SWCA Synod office at 1300 East Colorado Street, Glendale, CA 91205.

Memorials may come from any institution, agency, synod ministry board, coalition, or congregation, and must bear the signatures of at least five people who are members of the Southwest California Synod or Pacifica Synod.

All memorials not received by the Joint Committee on Reference and Counsel by the due date shall be placed on the assembly agenda as new business, requiring a two-thirds vote of voting members to put the resolution before the assembly for consideration.

The Joint Reference and Counsel Committee will take the following under consideration as it reviews and makes recommendations regarding submitted memorials.
  • The committee should review each memorial to make sure that it is presented in correct grammatical form, so that the intent of the memorial is clear, and so that the joint assembly can consider the memorial on the grounds of its merits and not get side-tracked in issues of grammar.
  • The committee should review the whereases of the memorial so that they offer correct information and support the memorial, and are not prejudicial, unnecessarily pejorative or factually incorrect.
  • The committee should determine whether or not the memorial is consistent with the Constitutions of the ELCA and the SWCA and Pacifica Synods.
  • The committee should determine to the best of its ability what financial impact, if any, adoption of the memorial would have on both synods.
The committee may make a recommendation to the assembly regarding the memorial. The recommendation should be based in part on whether or not the memorial meets the above four guidelines.

Synod Assembly Fee Invoices
The congregational registration fees for this year's assembly will be $575. An invoice was mailed on January 27 to each congregation, detailing voting member assignments for your congregation and allowing congregations to take advantage of an  Early Bird Discounted Congregational Registration Fee ($500 for 3 voting members) if paid by February 29, 2020.

Please note that the discount only applies to the congregational  registration fee. After February 29, the congregational fee increases to $575. The cost for any additional voting members remains at $195, so if you're not sure at this time whether you will be able to send additional voting members, you are encouraged to at least send your invoice in with the $500 payment to receive the congregational fee discount.

Every congregation is entitled to send an additional voting member if that member is a youth (under 18) or young adult (age 18-30) at no additional charge.  You may register them online when registration opens March 1, 2020.

Fee reductions for smaller congregations may be requested. To do so, please contact Rachel Line at [email protected] by February 29, 2020. Please note that fee reductions are based on financial data reported with your 2018 Congregational Report.

Just a reminder - payment of this invoice does not register any individuals from your congregation! You will have the opportunity to register your voting members and visitors through the online registration registration process beginning on March 1, 2020. Watch for the link to register on our website and in our e-newsletters.

If you have questions about your Synod Assembly invoice or registration for the assembly, please contact Terri Robertson at 714.352.8732 or by email at  [email protected].
