Student Led Walkout May 10
Hello Parents and Caregivers of SLP Students,

As we are entering into the homestretch of the school year there are a lot of things to be optimistic about. At the middle school, our students are proving to be incredibly resilient. There really is truth to the saying “you don’t miss your water until your well is dry.” Students have been embracing a variety of learning opportunities, connecting with their classmates, and navigating the obstacles of pandemic life with courage and compassion.

In an effort to create dialogue and unity in our school, a group of our students have organized a socially distanced student-led walkout that will celebrate our diverse student body, inclusivity, and equality for all with the hope of building community through listening, learning, and leadership. On Monday, May 10, from 1:40 - 2:40 p.m., students have the option to attend a peaceful gathering on the soccer fields to express their feelings about things occurring around them. Several student leaders have prepared messages and other students will have the opportunity to share their thoughts as well.

As Superintendent Osei has stated previously in the Communicator, “We support our students’ rights to free speech and peaceful assembly, so long as doing so is not disruptive and is done in accordance with district policies. We believe students need safe space for reflection and discussion and we are working with our students to ensure their safety.”

Students are expected to remain on school property because, as Supt. Osei stated, “When students leave school property during the school day to engage in non-school district sponsored activities, schools are no longer responsible for their supervision and safety. Our goal is to keep students on district property and to keep students safe.” Students who choose to attend will be expected to return safely to their classes following this gathering.

Please talk with your student about this event so you can support your child to make the best decision possible. Students will be marked absent if not in class, and parents are asked to email [email protected]. if wishing to excuse their student for this peaceful gathering. Teachers will remain in their classrooms and continue to teach those students who chose to remain in class.

I wish all of you a great weekend and a Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in our community.

Kind Regards,

Jason Boll

French 8
Students in French 8 were able to spend a morning studying the work of Claude Monet and the Impressionists. They completed a digital treasure hunt that involved viewing a number of paintings and solving some puzzles. They culminated their study with their own version of his famous Water Lilies pieces using chalk. While the students got their hands dirty with chalk, their brains mastered the art of blending and creating.

"Thank You" to Site Council and Families from the MS Staff
In honor of Staff Appreciation Week for all Educators, our parents from site council sponsored a breakfast this morning for all who work at the middle school.

Laura Truett and Leah Huesing Anklam hosted the event representing our parent/guardian community. Thank you to all the parents and families who donated to the staff appreciation breakfast.

Please see the pictures below. This is the first time we have been able to have an all-staff gathering in person this year.......lots of smiling faces were present.

Thank you for your kindness and support.

Grade 8 Families - Community Project Update
We are getting close to the end of our Community Projects for the year. So many students have found profound ways to take action in these turbulent times!

As students begin to work on their presentations there are some things we want to share with families:
  1. Presentations are going to be captured digitally this year and are due May 19th.
  2. A template will be available for students who need it (Link to make a copy of that template) but students are encouraged to be creative with how they present the information.
  3. Presentations are going to be shown in a variety of places such as all grade level advisories and possibly the public via OT News.
  4. Presentations are a way for supervisors to gather evidence on the 4 criteria that will be scored (see rubrics on pp. 5-9)
  5. Presentations are opportunities for students to share what they did or didn't get accomplished with their projects and what they learned from the experience.
  6. Here's a link to an abbreviated student Community Project Digital Notebook that has a presentation checklist on page 4.
  7. Students will have their final check-in with supervisors during the week of May 12. Students are encouraged to present to their supervisors for feedback.

Please feel free to reach out to me with questions.

We Love Our Seniors
The Park Community and Schools Foundation is partnering with the SLP High School Senior Planning committee and is selling WE LOVE OUR SENIORS signs. Show your PARK PRIDE for the Class of 2021 by buying and planting a sign for our whole community to see. All proceeds from sign sales and donations are being split between the foundation (which goes right back into our schools) and the other half is helping to fund the FIRST FREE Senior Celebration in SLP history!

We really appreciate your support!!!

Thank you!!!!

Free Groceries for Families Who Qualified for Free or Reduced-Price Meals during the 2020-21 School Year
Families in our district who qualify for free or reduced-price meals are now eligible for additional emergency nutritional benefits offered from the Federal government.

These benefits are provided by Federal “Pandemic-Electronic Benefit Transfer” funds (P-EBT); a temporary food benefit to families with children who would have received free and reduced-price meals if schools were open. These additional benefits may be retroactive to September 2020, depending on when eligibility for free or reduced-meals is determined.

Families who qualify will receive separate electronic grocery cards for each student in the family. The cards would include funds (approximately $6.82/day) for each day your student was in distance learning during the school year. Cards will be mailed from the State of Minnesota in late March 2021.

If you have already qualified for free or reduced-price meals earlier this school year, you don’t need to do anything because your family will automatically receive these new Federal nutritional benefits.

However, if your family income has been affected by the pandemic and you have not completed an Application for Education Benefits (free or reduced-price meal application) for this school year, please complete and submit your application as soon as possible. As mentioned above, these funds will retro back to September 2020.

COVID-19 vs. Allergies: Do I Need to Quarantine?
STUDENT & FAMILY Information Regarding Allergy/Cold/Flu Season

Some symptoms of general illness such as seasonal allergies, colds, and/or flu overlap with symptoms of COVID-19. If a parent/guardian/family member believes their child/student has any illness - which displays the same symptoms as COVID-19 - the student, and other household members, are not allowed to attend school until:

The symptomatic student tests negative for COVID-19; or an alternative diagnosis (such as allergies, cold, or flu) is received from the child’s/student’s health care provider in written form and copied to the school health office.

If the student with symptoms does not test for COVID-19, or receive an alternative diagnosis from their health care provider, they would need to isolate at home for 10 days and household members would follow the 14 day quarantine protocol.
