2020 Teachers of the Year Grow Systems Thinking and Communication SkillsTOY

Last month CSTP and OSPI convened the 2020 regional and state teachers of the year for two days to grow their systems thinking and communications knowledge and skills. Over the two days, they met with a variety of education stakeholders and organizations, like WEA, Partnership for Learning and the Seattle Times Education Lab, toured the Gates Foundation Discovery Center (which is free to the public and has an excellent exhibit now called "We The Future"), heard from Teacher of the Year Alumni about their out-of-classroom policy experiences and recorded interviews for a podcast and videos.

League of Education Voters Communications Director Arik Korman recorded the interviews of the teachers, including 2020 State Teacher of the Year Amy Campbell, which you can find here. The teachers discuss their educational philosophies, their visions for their students and what they would do to improve education for Washington students.

Speaking of interviews, KUOW RadioActive's student reporter Eriberto Saavedra Felix produced a story on his teacher and the 2020 Puget Sound Regional Teacher of the Year Reid Sundblad from Highline School District. Reid discusses a unique program he runs called Los Siete and student report Eriberto discusses its impact in his life. Side note: KUOW RadioActive is a radio producing opportunity for high school students in WA. They also provide workshops and training. Check out their website for more information.
Inclusionary Practices Project Update

CSTP is assisting OSPI in rolling out the Inclusionary Practices Project established by the legislature last session. Each month we'll provide an update about the project and opportunities educators can engage with the project.

Over the next month OSPI is approving form packages for over 150 pilot schools. Funds for these invited schools will go to support, grow and extend inclusionary practices in a variety of ways focused on data dives, building the knowledge and skills of educators and systems analysis and change.

The first round of applications for demonstration sites closed on December 20. Applications are being reviewed and we hope to have more information about these sites in next month's newsletter.

You can find out more information about the project on OSPI's website.
Equity in Your Framework Registration EIYF

Are you an evaluator who completed TPEP Stage 1 and 2 training prior to June 2018? If so, we encourage you to attend the new Equity in Your Framework professional development session on March 6, 2020 in Pasco, WA. Please register for the Instructional Framework specific to your district: CEL, Danielson, or Marzano. Session offerings will be specific to each Instructional Framework.

TPEP Stage 1 and 2 were recently updated to include an intentional focus on equity. If you completed Stage 1 and 2 training prior to the changes, this session will provide an opportunity to engage in activities and discussions to gain new insights of how equity and equitable practices are embedded in each instructional framework. Participants will begin to develop an understanding of how to use instructional framework to grow teaching practice through an equity stance. Attendees will leave with tools, terms and strategies for monitoring racial equity their own practice.

When: March 6, 2020
Where: ESD 123, 3924 West Court Street, Pasco, WA 99301
Who Should Attend: Administrators and evaluators who received TPEP Stage 1 and 2 training prior to June 2018

Clock Hours Available: 5 ($10 clock hour fee)

If you have questions regarding registration contact Erin Marzwick at [email protected].
Shoreline Leadership Academy Update

CSTP's work with Shoreline Leadership Development Academy is forging ahead. Last month the academy tackled the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to lead in collaborative roles. This team of amazing teachers is working on learning to collaborate with one another as well. They value their time to work as a network and are modeling the practices they will take back to their buildings. Later this month, the academy participants have invited their administrators and will share their progress and learning with them.
