Deschutes Public Library "In the Know" Newsletter
July 24-August 14, 2019
Expanded Library Hours Coming August 1
Starting August 1, Deschutes Public Library customers will have 34 additional hours each month during which time they can access library buildings and services. The increased hours--which include earlier opening and/or later closing times at various libraries in the district--will allow customers of all ages to use the library at a wider variety of times, something asked for by people in the Central Oregon community. Find the full list of new hours online here.
Summer Reading Continues through August
Have you picked up your free book and reading log yet? If not, don't worry; there's still time! Just stop by any Deschutes Public Library now through the end of August. When you pick up a reading log you get to pick out a FREE book, and we have books available for all ages, from children through adults! Return your reading log by August 31 and you're entered to win some fantastic prizes. Learn more about the Summer Reading Program and the prizes, and download extra reading logs, here.
Space Camp! Let's Rocket to the Stars
Calling all stargazers--rocket into space exploration at your library! Bring children ages 6-11 and discover the stories behind the stars that map the night sky. Constellations are groups of stars that form a picture and are located close together in the night sky. Explore the origin of stars, learn the myths of our night sky, map constellations, and more!

Spoken Word Happenings in August
Spoken word poetry has its roots in oral traditions and performance, and its power can leave an audience transfixed. This August we'll be joined by Desmond Spann, whose work has been featured on OPB's Oregon Art Beat, for two spoken-word focused events. Spann will lead a workshop on August 10 on taking poetry from the page to the stage. He'll then perform his work on August 11 (both events at the Downtown Bend Library). The artistry continues on August 14 when we join MOsley WOtta at the Commons Cafe for Wordsmith's Wednesdays. Find a full schedule of "Write Here!" events on our website here
Calling All Teens & Tweens!
There's so much happening for teens and tweens this summer at your library. From breakout rooms and spa days to robots and art workshops, there are free hands-on activities all summer long. Be sure to check out the events on our website here and in the next column over. Also be sure to browse the Teens page on our website or check in with a librarian for great summer reading recommendations!

An Update on Lynda.com and the Library
Due to privacy concerns, Deschutes Public Library no longer provides access to Lynda.com as of August 1, 2019. Lynda.com was purchased by social media platform LinkedIn in 2015, and LinkedIn recently rebranded Lynda.com to LinkedIn Learning. Part of the transition includes requiring library customers to create a LinkedIn account and profile before being able to access the learning platform; in the past, only a library card number was necessary and no personal information was required. A fundamental right to privacy is a foundational tenant of Deschutes Public Library and all public libraries, as noted in Article VII of the American Library Association's Bill of Rights We regret the change but are committed to maintaining our customers' privacy at all times and in all situations. We will continue to search for a learning platform that honors that commitment.
