COMMUNITY PARTNER PROFILE
Raymond Bowdish
|
|
Name:
Raymond Bowdish
Role:
University Instructional Specialist/WISER Center Coordinator
Hobbies:
I like hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and most other outdoor activities. I have hiked in the Smokey Mountains and the Rockies in Wyoming, Colorado, and in Alberta Canada, where I ascended the Saskatchewan Glacier to the Columbia Ice Field.
Who is someone you admire, and why:
My wife, Megan, because she got her degree at SUNY Potsdam in English and she now runs Never Tire Farm with only four employees! Funny story of how we came up with the name for the farm. I was plowing with a team of horses and I kept hitting old tires that were left by the previous land tenant. When I went into my house, exhausted from digging out tires and being thrown from the plow several times, I said to my Megan “I never want to see another tire again on this farm!” We had been trying to think of a name for our farm at the time. She responded, "How about Never Tire Farm?” I thought it was a great pun and we agreed it was best name for the farm.
What are three pet peeves?
Ignorance, intolerance, laziness.
What is a typical day like for you?
Pretty crazy. I oversee eight greenhouses, a little over half an acre of commercial greenhouse property. We sell wholesale. I live a complicated life split between farms and the WISER Center. I wouldn’t trade it but sometimes I wonder....
Do you have any skills or talents that most people don't know about?
I used to be a teamster. My father and I used horses to process hay over nearly 400 acres. We did this with other local farmers who used tractors. I have used horses to clear land, log, plow, harrow, mow grass, rake hay, bale hay - and give hay rides as well.
What publications do you regularly read?
Online educational articles.
Scientific American, Science Digest
. Agricultural stuff, I am a biologist but I have interests all over the place.
What is your perspective of food and how it relates to recovery?
Super important! The motto “You are what you eat” is exactly that and food is what gives the body energy, it just makes you feel good when you eat the right whole foods. I want to put a course together; Biology of Learning. This course will revolve around three wellness activities; rest, socialization, and nutrition, and how these directly affect one’s well-being. This will teach a person how to eat food - not a lot and mostly plants. These aspects of health are crucial in a person in recovery as their bodies are not healthy. Giving these living, wholesome, alive foods will give a person in recovery what their body is truly craving down to a cellular level: nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

FEASIBILITY STUDY RELEASED!
|
|
Overview of Findings
The Mobile Farmers Market Feasibility Study, made possible through a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), has been completed and is available on the
GardenShare website, along with a synopsis of the findings and recommendations moving forward.
Our sincere appreciation to Maria Corse, Deep Root Center; Flip Fillipi, CCE Harvest Kitchen; Lindsey Pashow, CCE Harvest New York; and Cherie Whitten, The Hub and Whitten Family Farms for serving on the Feasibility Study Steering Committee and helping guide our direction and focus. Also thanks to Carol Cady, St. Lawrence University, and student volunteer, Eliza Gillian for their GIS work and expertise. It will be extremely helpful as we determine how best to improve access to fresh, local food, for county residents living in our low access/low income census tracts.
Finally, thank you to Aviva Gold and CITEC Business Solutions for their consulting services, financial analysis, and authoring of the final report. While the findings did not find a mobile farmers market financially feasibility at this time, it was very helpful in assessing farmer interest in pursuing options for extending market reach into low-access areas, demand for local fresh food, customer preferences related to food type, and barriers that would need to be addressed for a mobile market to succeed in the future.
We'll continue to explore the possibilities!

Our
Annual Cabin Fever Trivia Night
was a wonderful success, with a record-setting 24 teams answering fun, but difficult, questions about digestion, cultivars, famous food lines from famous movies and a little North Country geography. In addition to having a great time, over $3800 was raised to support GardenShare's work to solve the problem of hunger and strengthen local food systems in St. Lawrence County!

Winners Dave and Kathy Rice and Sam Joseph and Laurel were hardly "Grasping for Straws"!
