The House and Senate are in session this week. The House will consider eight bills under suspension of the rules, including the Secure 5G and Beyond Act of 2020 (H.R. 2881), which requires the president to develop a strategy to protect U.S. fifth and future generations of wireless technologies; and the Prison to Proprietorship for Formerly Incarcerated Act (H.R. 5065), which provides entrepreneurship training from the SCORE small business mentorship program to previously incarcerated individuals. For the remainder of the week, the House will vote on the PFAS Action Act of 2019 (H.R. 535), which requires the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to create nationwide protective measures to regulate and mitigate pollution from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), an emerging family of chemicals contaminating U.S. municipal and private water supplies; and a War Powers Resolution to limit President Trump's military actions regarding Iran.
The Senate will vote on the nomination of Jovita Carranza to be Administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration, a Cabinet-level position. Kelly Loeffler will be sworn in as the newest U.S. senator on Monday. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp (R) announced in early December that Loeffler, a financial executive and professional women's basketball team owner, would be his choice to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of former Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA), who officially stepped down on Dec. 31 due to health reasons.
As of Jan. 6, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has not yet sent the chamber's two impeachment articles to the Senate. Additionally, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said they have not yet reached a deal on President Trump's impeachment trial.
