To really listen to others, we must first learn to listen to ourselves. This requires us to learn the art of deep listening. Deep Listening involves listening from a deep, receptive, and caring place in oneself. It is listening that is generous, empathic, supportive, accurate, and trusting. I invite you to come and worship as I share with you some personal stories of how I learned the importance of Deep Listening. Sunday is also National Coming Out Day and we will celebrate that in the service. Coming out can be an arduous journey that requires being willing to listen to oneself and to honor one's decision to live authentically.

Thoughts from Rev. Dave
This past week, we have been witness to three major events in our lives. The presidential debate, the news of President Trump testing positive for Covid-19, and the cavalier attitude and response by our President to the Virus. Just when we think that things couldn't get worse, we are surprised. If we spend time being brought down by these events, they can have a very negative impact upon us and those that we love.
One thing that I have learned during these times is the importance of continuing to build up our own reservoir of resolve. The best way to do this is to on a daily basis take the time to take care of ourselves. Take 5 minutes at the start and end of each day to ponder over the blessings that we received that day and offer gratitude.
Many people have shared with me that they are so busy with all of the work that they have to do: taking care of their children, parents or others, that is hard to find time for themselves just to sit. I realize that many of you don't have 30 minutes extra. So, I am asking you just for this coming week take five minutes at the start of your day. Go somewhere in your home where you can be alone and just sit, breath and be present for yourself. Try deep listening, really listen to that inner voice. Do the same thing at the end of your day. Try this for the next week and see if it helps in some small way to ease your anxiety, calm your spirit and assist you in being more present for yourself and others. The month of October our worship theme is Deep Listening. I believe that deep listening first needs to begin with us really taking the time to listen to that inner voice. May this coming week be one of calmness and one of discovery as you take time each day to stop and listen.

MAM Musing
In yesterday's worship service, I offered this invitation for the month of October:
"I invite you to obtain and read or re-read the 2017 book On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder. It is a #1 New York Times Bestseller, small but mighty, and serves as a guide for surviving and resisting America's turn towards authoritarianism. I have preached about this text before, but its message becomes more and more important with each day. Stand by. Need I say more?
Meanwhile, in yesterday's sermon I mentioned that my prayer is "We just can't be healed, we must be transformed," which comes from singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer's song, "The Wolf is at the Door." I received a query as to what prayer means for me. My deepest understanding of prayer comes from Thich Nhat Hanh's book The Energy of Prayer, another small but mighty text, in which he states, "The act of praying is not just an empty wish, because behind each prayer is a practice of mindfulness and concentration."
Lastly, if anyone out there in UU Land has a telescope collecting dust in some proverbial corner, I would love to borrow it. Contact me at your earliest convenience. I love autumnal and winter skies. I love autumnal. I love.

Emily's Post
Dear Ones, I am writing this morning from my sukkah--a temporary outdoor structure that Jews build for the eight-day celebration of Sukkot: a holiday celebrating the harvest and commemorating the years the Jews wandered in the desert living in temporary structures. This festival is resonating especially strongly for me this year. Along with feeling a great need to embody the experience of not being at home in these times, I've been moved by a practice I just learned about--the practice of inviting the energy of beloved ancestors (relations, friends, or public figures) into the sukkah. I've come to recognize that I need the energy of my ancestors now--I need the ritual-making energy of my mother, Anne, who marked occasions small and large. I need the sense of humor of my maternal grandparents, Hallie and Bert, who sought opportunities to play--they shared laughter together even when their bodies slowly failed them. I need the recurring call for justice-making of my paternal grandparents, Allen and Helen, who were actively in touch with leaders and politicians, the newspapers, and friends: urging them to join in making our world more just. This month, I hope you'll listen deeply within to learn which energy you need. And may you then invite the inspiration of beloved ancestors, related or unrelated, into your lives and into the world. Some of our members recently received bogus emails from an entity impersonating our Senior Minister Reverend Macklin, asking for money in the form of gift cards. Fraudulent emails like this should be immediately deleted. Do not respond to them. Do not send money.
All email addresses of our ministers and staff end in uubloomington.org . If any email you receive about church business does not end in uubloomington.org, it is not from us.
Our ministers, staff, and board members will never email you asking for any money besides your pledge payment!

Annual Holiday Bazaar--Online Version!
Work is moving forward on UUCB's pandemic online version of our annual Bazaar. This year it will be an online sale/auction and will run from Nov. 20-30. We will be using Auctria, the same auction website service that we used for the Goods and Services Auction in May 2020. We plan for the Bazaar to offer the best of both sale and auction, with old favorites like the Cookie Walk and Gourmet Galaxy, and new specialties like the Over 21 Basket and a very special T-shirt.
The timeline of the Bazaar is:
October 10 - Bazaar group leaders and task force leaders (category leaders) will begin uploading items to the auction site.
November 10 - Donations deadline. All donations (cookies, gourmet galaxy, quality collectibles) need to be listed on the auction site by the category leaders.
November 20-30 Online Bazaar. Go to the Bazaar auction web site to buy or bid on your favorites. We will be sure you all have the link by November 20.
December 4-5 Pick up and delivery of purchased Bazaar items.
Help is needed to make this the best Bazaar. We need a few people willing to give 8 or more hours in a masked and socially distanced environment to help with intake and sorting of donated items. Contact Ruellen Fessenbecker, rfessenb (at) indiana.edu

Special Rules about Food Handling for Bazaar Bakers
and Makers.
In order to protect ourselves and the community, these rules have been decided upon. They will also be published on the Bazaar auction web site. These rules aren't much different than our usual expectations, with the exception of the mask and gloves during decorating and packaging. Happy Baking, everyone!
Our bakers work in their home kitchens and have been given these instructions:
- Always have impeccably clean hands and dishes.
- No masks needed while preparing food for baking.
- After baking, while handling and packaging food, wear a mask.
- Gloves are encouraged when food is cool enough to allow this.
- Hand decorating of baked goods should be done while wearing a mask and gloves.
Cookie Donations for the Holiday Bazaar
The Cookie Cruise will be sailing again in the Bazaar! We will be selling baked cookies and bars as well as frozen cookie dough and cookie packages (cookies and cocoa kits, cookie decorating baskets). To simplify weighing and packaging, we are asking bakers to use recipes we will supply for a few "basic" cookie and bar offerings, but donations of special cookies and bars are also welcome. Social Justice Funds Committee Fall Grants
Application Deadline October 16
Each fall, the Social Justice Funds Committee (SJFC) solicits proposals for grants in support of local social justice projects. The funds for these grants are provided through the Lundin Social Justice Fund in the Special Purposes Funds. Awards are based, in part, on available funds, number of grant applications received and the guidelines outlined below. Projects must be based in Southern Indiana and be consistent with the mission of our church. Priority will be given to applications from (1) Social Justice Task Forces, (2) projects that involve a significant number of members of the congregation, and (3) applications to seed new projects that will have an enduring benefit. The monies cannot be used to pay for professional services or salaries. Click here for details and the application form.

Collection of Items for New Leaf-New Life
September 20-October 20
Our Hope for Prisoners Task Force is allied with Monroe County's New Leaf-New Life, Inc., a non-profit that, in addition to assisting local jail inmates, supports those returning to our community from jail or prison via a local Transition Support Center (TSC). Many of our incarcerated neighbors come home with only the clothes they are released in. The TSC accepts clothing donations of any type. (Any not needed by TSC clients are exchanged for Goodwill clothing vouchers, which are distributed to clients.) There is always a need for new socks, new underwear, hygiene products, and backpacks. To support this effort, our Task Force is providing a labeled tote for such donations outside the church portico entrance from September 20 through October 20. Still Collecting Items
Through October 31, we will be collecting food, hygiene items, and clothing for Shalom Community Center and food for our Pantry at College Square.
Needed items: Chunky soups, tuna, canned vegetables and fruit, cereal, coffee, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, powdered milk, pasta, institutional size cans of food, condiments, tea, new socks. We have placed collection bins outside the building, under the north side porch near the Portico Entrance. Simply drive up and drop off--we are collecting donations from these bins daily. This is an invitation to join me on an autumn journey of personal exploration through autobiographical writing in community on Zoom.
This will be a drop-in group just like the group this past spring, which I now think of as Season 1.
We will meet every Tuesday afternoon 1:00-2:00
September 1 through October 27.
To begin with, even if you took part in Season 1, you need to register for Season 2 by clicking here.
You need to register only once, and can then attend as many Season 2 sessions after that as you choose. You may register up to a few minutes before a session begins.

The UU Children's Choir will contribute music (virtually) to selected services throughout the year. For the time being, this involves learning a song from a pre-recorded audio or video, and then recording your child singing along with a master track to send in for the compilation. Etiquette and Tips
for Zoom Users
Here are some useful tips to help ensure our Zoom meetings go smoothly for all involved:
If you haven't used Zoom before, click this link to download Zoom prior to the day of the meeting, and use this link to familiarize yourself with any features you may need to use--mute/unmute microphone, stop/start video, etc.
- Find a quiet space without background noise.
- Try to avoid backlight from bright windows; instead, sit facing a sunny window.
- Join the meeting a couple of minutes before the start time.
- Have your video on unless you are experiencing connection issues.
- If your name is not correctly displayed next to your picture, right click on your name and choose rename. Consider this your nametag, and include your pronouns after your name.
- Adjust your camera so it is at your eye level if possible.
- Mute your microphone when not speaking.
- If you want to speak, raise your hand so that the other participants know to give you an opportunity to talk.
- Be respectful of others in the meeting by avoiding other tasks while in the meeting such as eating, checking emails, and looking at your phone.
- At the end of the meeting, say goodbye before you sign off. If you need to leave a meeting early, let the meeting organizer or another participant via the chat or verbally. This is not always necessary in large meetings.
