A Note from the Special Project Manager...
This week students celebrated Valentine's Day with Kindness week, our theme was 'Planting Seeds of Kindness'. This was represented by a school garden that grew with every kind act. On Monday, each student received their own flower bud with no petals. As a student did something nice, they received a petal for their flower with their kind deed written on it. By Friday, our garden was blooming with large flowers filled with all the wonderfully kind things our students did for each other.

Some of our kindest acts were of students supporting each other through kind words and helping hands. Our students helped their classmates clean up, find missing items, and feel better when they were down. It was wonderful to see our entire school grow in caring through this project.

To end Kindness Week, our students made bags of food for families in need through a local community center that hands out meals for homeless individuals and families through their food pantry. Students divided then bagged rice and beans into smaller, 2 pound zip lock bags that can be given to families in need. This project was incorporated into our Math classes to help our students develop their weight and measurement skills.

TEAM CROSSROADS
in memory of Ms. Patti-Brown

The next Team Crossroads event will happen on March 7! Staff, students, and friends of Crossroads can participate in a race at 7 a.m. on March 7th at Minute Maid Park. (There are 10K, 5K and 1K options.) This will be the third event in which Ms. Azmae is coordinating Team Crossroads' participation this year!

Last December, our beloved teacher, Ms. Patti-Brown, ran in the Team Crossroads 5K in Sugarland. This next race, Team Crossroads will participate in her memory. All of our donations for this race will be in her honor.

Our fundraiser goal for this event is $5,000. 93% of the donations raised for the race will come directly back to the school.

The race takes place at Minute Maid Park on March 7. Click the link below to donate or join the team. Staff, parents, students and alumni are all encouraged to join.

Da Camera is back!

Last year we had the pleasure of collaborating with a wonderful organization called Da Camera who helped us create a school song. This year we are partnering with them again to create the Sounds of Crossroads. The students went all over the campus and recorded many different sounds. For the next couple of weeks the students will meet in small groups to arrange the sounds they recorded into songs. This week the high school students chose their favorite sounds to begin the first steps of creating a beat. All the students will continue to meet with the composer for the next several weeks, and on March 10th they will do a special performance to showcase their group project for their parents.
Cooking Club

This week, we tested out a classic French brunch recipe by making personal-sized quiches. For a more colorful, healthy twist, we hollowed out red, yellow, orange, and green bell peppers to use as a “crust” for our eggy filling. The kids could add their own culinary flair to their quiches by incorporating a variety of spices and toppings, including ham, cheese, scallions, tomatoes, spinach, parsley, and asparagus. Whether plain or elaborate, everyone was pleased with their little pepper cup egg creations. On Wednesday, our Superstar-Doubleday Cooking Club student made a rich and colorful Russian potato salad called Olivye, which was bursting with carrots, peas, potatoes, parsley, and ham. Yum!
Positivity Project - Kindness

This week's positivity characteristic was KINDNESS. Kindness has been a foundation of moral and spiritual life across cultures and religions throughout history. This character strength is grounded in the belief of a common humanity in which others are worthy of care, attention, affection, and compassion. Aristotle defined kindness as, ”helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped.” Kind people think about the needs and feelings of other people, and then act to help those people. Kind people are selfless. That is why a true act of kindness is distinct from helping another person in order to simply gain something for yourself. An individual with the strength of kindness helps others because it’s the right thing to do, not because they expect any reciprocal treatment or gain in reputation.
