DECEMBER   2018

As we transition to another year, think about if you would rather treat your pain with physical therapy or opioids. And as always, interesting stuff follows.
Study: Early Physical Therapy for Neck Pain Associated With Lower Imaging Rates, Opioid Prescriptions, and Overall Cost

neck pain
In findings on neck pain that echo the results of similar studies on low back pain, researchers have identified an association between early consultation with a physical therapist (PT) and lower rates of opioid prescription, imaging, and injections. Those lower-use rates contributed to significant cost savings over a 1-year study period compared with patients who waited 90 days or more before seeing a PT, according to the study's authors.

Physical Therapy Helps College Student Control Pain, and Avoid Opioids
When she was 23, Morgan broke her big toe and it was placed in a cast. She expected a quick recovery, but nearly a week later she was still experiencing severe pain. Unable to tolerate the restriction of the cast, she had it removed.
Two weeks after the injury, her foot was still discolored and swollen, and she was experiencing an intense burning pain. "I was terrified, I did not understand how a broken toe could cause this much pain," she said.
One afternoon, while taking a shower, her foot turned purple and the pain became so unbearable, it caused Morgan to pass out. She was taken to the emergency room, where she was given a referral to see a neurologist.   To read the entire article,  click here.

DENVER RESCUE MISSION DONATION CHALLENGE
It was another fantastic year for all of us to make donations to the Denver Rescue Mission. Bev took over all the donations (183 hygiene packs) on Dec 24th and DRM was extremely grateful. Thank you for your support during this holiday season.

SOMETHING GOOD -
This man donated 200,000 miles to strangers so they can go home for the holidays
Peter Shankman travels for a living, giving speeches around the country. The last thing he wants to do in his free time is travel from his home in New York.  So for the fifth year in a row, Shankman is donating hundreds of thousands of miles to people in need - those who can't afford to buy a flight, but want to be with sick loved ones during the holidays, or a parent who wants to see a faraway child.
Shankman posts his contest on the social media site Imgur, and other Imgur users vote for winners of Shankman's miles. After the initial year of the giveaway, other travelers started seeing  Shankman's posts on Imgur and began donating their miles to his contest, multiplying the gift.
