This Sunday, Suzanne Kobayashi will be leading worship at both services. Suzanne has been connected with Christ Memorial for many years. She currently serves on our Bishop’s Committee as the Lead Link for Long Range Planning. Suzanne also plays bass with our music team at the 9:30 am service. She is currently discerning the call to the ministry of a deacon.

Suzanne’s passion is NVC, Non-Violent Communication, developed by Marshall Rosenberg. Here’s a little info about NVC from Wikipedia: “Habits of thinking and speaking leading to use of violence (social, psychological and physical) are learned through culture. NVC theory supposes all human behavior stems from attempts to meet universal human needs . The needs are never in conflict. Rather, conflict arises when strategies for meeting needs clash. NVC proposes people identify shared needs, revealed by the thoughts and feelings surrounding these needs, and collaborate to develop strategies and make requests of each other to meet each other's needs.”

The Church Season of Epiphany
“Upon Being Shown” is how the word “Epiphany” translates from the Greek “epi-phanein.” The three wise men were led by a star and “shown” the savior of the world. God is always showing something of Godself to us – through creation, people, scripture, ritual, meditation, and the events of life, including struggle and suffering. During this season, our discipline is to pay attention. We become more aware of God manifesting Godself to us.

Centering Prayer with Dr. Matthew Miller
Sunday, February 3rd
4:00 - 5:30 pm in the Sanctuary
Beginning in February, Centering Prayer will be held on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Centering Prayer is a wonderful way to quiet our minds and be present to our God. There are many gifts that come with a centering practice: relieving stress and anxiety, creative inspiration, awakening of the senses, and a sense of becoming one with Mary, Jesus and our God.

Most of us know Dr. Matt Miller from Sunday worship as the guitarist with the beautiful bass voice, who wrote several music settings to the Advent scriptures. Dr. Matt graduated from UCLA with a PhD in Medieval English Literature in 1993, and decided the most useful thing he could do would be to teach people literacy skills. He did so until 2016, working at various locations including Island School and Kauai Community College. Now he is doing something even more useful — teaching Centering Prayer, a discipline he says is “paradise.”


Bishop’s Committee Update

Our Bishop’s Committee oversees the “business” of the church. The following are the highlights from the meeting last Sunday:

  • Treasurer Scott Oliver reviewed the church’s proposed 2019 budget. Members made suggestions and changes. The revised budget will be presented at the January 27 Annual Meeting.

  • Bishop’s Warden David Akana gave a final report on the columbarium construction. The committee agreed to establish a maintenance fund for the columbarium. Language for a dedication plaque for the columbarium was approved, pending a review by the Akana and Sproat families.

  • The committee reviewed a report from Branch and Melody Lotspeich regarding columbarium policies and agreements. Suggestions were made and the Bishop’s Committee will revisit this at the February meeting.

  • Suzanne Kobayashi presented a report on rental rates for church property. The committee agreed to charge $25/hour (excluding storage space) to current tenants through 2019. Variances will be at the church’s discretion. This rate excludes tenants who have exclusive use of the space they rent.

  • The slate for the 2019 Bishop’s Committee was approved and will be announced at the Annual Meeting for approval from the mission.

One important ministry of Christ Memorial is the opening of our church doors, Monday through Friday, during the day. It’s amazing the number of people who drop in to pray, meditate, or just to seek a few minutes of quiet. Pastor Gae believes our country would be very different if all churches kept their doors unlocked. Unfortunately fear has crept into many churches.

Helen Mitsui Shared Blessings Thrift Shop

We need your help!
Friends of Shared Blessings,

This past year we have worked very hard to discourage people from bringing donations when the Shop is not open. The reason for this is because there are “scavengers” who climb the fence, rummage through things, help themselves, and leave many items dirty and unusable. If you ever need to drop off items when we are not open, please contact us and we can make arrangements to meet you. If you ever see someone dumping their donation over the fence, please stop and kindly ask them to come back when we are open. Mahalo!
Our Thrift Shop volunteers dedicate their time to create our island’s most popular thrift shop. They sort countless donations and Auntie Helen prices each one. They make the effort to know most of our customers by name. They work hard! And they also have good times together.
