As we enter May, we know that three of the top questions parents have are about summer school, the plan for picking up items left at school and dropping off items that must be returned, and info on our high school for the 8
th
grade parents.
Following our meeting with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education representatives, we will not be able to offer on-site summer school until August. Therefore, we will offer online learning options prior to August and we know many of you are anxious for decisions as you plan your summer. Please bear with us as we work through the logistics based on your summer school responses on your intent to return forms, along with several other continually moving pieces. We will communicate the summer program with everyone once it is finalized.
As for picking up your students' items from school, to ensure staff, student and family safety, along with physical distancing requirements, this process will take place throughout May. Each family will receive direct communication regarding arranging these pick ups and drop offs.
Finally, there will be an 8th grade parent online session for A. L. International High School Wednesday, May 13th at 6pm. 8
th
grade parents will receive an email with details and a link to sign up.
I continue to be inspired every day by the acts of kindness and heroism that take place in our community. We are in this together and we will get through this together.

Incoming MS 6th graders 3rd language
Dear Incoming Sixth Grade Families,
It is time for your student to choose their third language class for middle school. Your student will take either Mandarin or Spanish three days a week for three years. Please watch the video below and then complete the form below with your choice. The deadline to complete this form is Friday, May 8th. EIP 2020 Online
 We're excited to invite each and every one of you to join us for EIP virtually this year on May 9, from the comfort of your home, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
You may wonder why we are moving forward at this time, particularly with the realization that we have families who have been negatively impacted financially from the effects of this pandemic, while knowing that for all of us, the future impact remains unknown.
That "unknown" is exactly why we need to move forward with EIP. Although EIP has always been a great party and opportunity for us to celebrate together, its primary purpose has been to raise funds to help the school and our students in a variety of ways. This need for funds is still very real and is needed now, perhaps more than ever before.
To emphasize that need, we are pleased to announce that all donations to this year's Fund A Need at EIP will go toward the Académie Lafayette Families
GoFundMe which is an effort to help our school provide for our families in need.

20-21 Intent to Return
& Summer Enrollment
Parents were sent the "Intent to Return" form this week. Please log-in to SchoolMint right away to complete these forms so you will receive your re-enrollment information in a timely manner.
In-person summer school will not be permitted until August at the earliest. This is based on mandates that school buildings remain closed going into summer. Online learning options will be provided prior to August. Please bear with us as we work through the logistics based on your summer school responses on your intent to return forms. Grading Practices during Covid-19
We want to communicate clearly our grading policy for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. We have monitored what other schools/districts are doing and listened to feedback from staff and parents.
Our goal with grades during this time is to keep parents informed of their child's progress and to keep students motivated to work till the end, while not penalizing families who are struggling at this time.
To that end, we will adopt a "hold harmless" approach. Grades will be set where they were at the end of Trimester 2, so students can maintain that grade or improve their grade/ level of proficiency if they demonstrate progress. We expect students to be consistently engaged in learning, and teachers will continue to assess student work and communicate with parents. If you have questions about grades, please contact your child's teacher directly.

K-5 Survey Insights
Thank you to all of the parents who took our survey to provide us feedback on your experience with the first weeks of online school. We had more than 50% of parents respond and a variety of changes, including a revamp of the 5th-grade program have already been implemented as a result of your input. A summary of your responses are as follows:

86.5% of respondents ranked the first few weeks of school at a rating of 3 or higher on a scale of 1-5 (1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest).

When asked about issues encountered, most issues encountered were related to technology and hotspots. We have provided 287 Chromebooks and 47 hotspots and provided technical support assistance to address these issues. The second most common issue was
with communication in the first two weeks. The issues have been reducing as parents adjust the number of notifications received and as teachers adjust the number of notifications sent.

92% of respondents rated their comfort in using Google classroom at a rating of 3 or higher on a scale of 1-5.

89% of respondents indicated the schedule allows them to follow live sessions and complete the schoolwork.
-
57% of respondents are satisfied that the students are being given the right amount of work, 30% feel there is too much work given, while 13% feel there is not enough.
We will still modify and improve as we go along and continue to encourage feedback on how we can continue to provide the best educational experience for our students and families.

Host a French Intern for the 20-21 School Year
Would your family consider hosting
an intern for the upcoming school year?
 Académie Lafayette, French Immersion Charter School, is pleased to announce that we will again be welcoming interns for the 2020-21 school year. However, we still need host families. This year AL will save approximately $260,000 by using the intern program. If you are able to welcome an intern into your home, it's almost like you're donating $20,000!
 Interns are university students from French speaking countries who spend a year working in the classrooms of our youngest students. Host families open their homes and welcome an intern for a semester or for a year. They provide a private
bedroom and meals when you are together as a family. The school provides a generous monthly stipend to the intern and a monthly city bus pass.
Hosting an intern is a great way for your children to speak French at home, to discover more about francophone culture, and to have someone to visit when your family goes to France in the future!

Food Service: Time Change
- Free sack lunches and additional groceries and supplies will be provided to families as they become available for pick up at the Armour Campus, 201 E. Armour Blvd, KCMO 64111, at the east door on McGee Street, from 11:00 - 1:00 Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Families are also welcome to deliver grocery, toiletry and cleaning supplies for donation at that time.
- Meals for families will be available. The meals will feed 12 people. They will be available first come, first served.
