Timely Reminder: Certificate in Service Learning Completion
|
|
The Certificate in Service Learning recognizes students’ experiences in utilizing classroom skills to meet community-identified needs. Earning the certificate involves taking classes, engaging in volunteer work, and reflecting on service learning experiences. Once a student has earned the certificate, it is acknowledged on their official academic transcript. Completion of this certificate fulfills KU Core Goal 5: Social Responsibility and Ethics.
Students who have registered for the Certificate and are graduating this spring have until the end of the semester to submit their Certificate materials (Service 101 reflection, service hour documentation, and final Certificate reflection). If you are not graduating this semester, you can register for the certificate at any time!

Service Learning Course Spotlight:
UNIV 492
|
|
UNIV 492 is a 2-credit online course that requires 40 hours of service work and fulfills Core Goal 5.2. This summer, the CSL will offer a local and Alternative Breaks section of this six-week course, starting at the end of May!
The course content of UNIV 492 deepens students' understanding of service by introducing knowledge and skills needed to carry out effective and ethical volunteer efforts.
If you plan to engage in a service project or long-term volunteering this summer, UNIV 492 is a great opportunity to earn course credit for the experience while gaining valuable insights into ethical, just, and sustainable service principles.

Summer Job Spotlight:
Campus Cupboard Student Employee
|
|
The KU Campus Cupboard is hiring for summer staff! The Campus Cupboard coordinator assists in the operations of the KU Campus Cupboard, a centralized on-campus food pantry.
The Campus Cupboard is a collaborative initiative between KU Student Affairs, the KU Center for Community Outreach, and Just Food.
Job responsibilities include:
- Coordinate food procurement and food recovery efforts for the Campus Cupboard through collaborative partnerships with Just Food, KU Dining, and other campus and community partners
- Be present in the Cupboard during its hours of operation and available to help students shop to select nutritious food options.
- Help to ensure safe social distancing and hygiene practices
- Work with, train, and support volunteers working in the Cupboard
- Respond to emails sent to campuscupboard@ku.edu

Service Opportunity Spotlight:
4-H Youth Futures Mentor
|
|
The purpose this volunteer opportunity is to provide mentorship to a group of high school students enrolled in the Advancement Via Individual determination (AVID) program through implementation of the National 4-H Youth Futures program.
Mentors will be committed to a number of programs held between June 24 and July 29.
Mentors participate in weekly class sessions as a part of weeklong bootcamps at Lawrence Free State High School. support mentees through the learning process, and create a climate of encouragement and student development for mentees.
If you're interested in providing a positive mentor experience, plan to pursue a career in education, or are looking to make a lasting impact on youth in Douglas County, this is the service opportunity for you!
