May 1, 2020

Dear Parents,

This week it feels like we finally are experiencing some signs of spring with the start of May.  I know we have been on a long road this past six weeks and I assure you that you are supported and appreciated. We are in this together!

Today I would like to share the May and June Remote Learning calendar, as well as status updates on our summer Adventures in Learning.

Remote Learning Schedule--May and June
As you are aware, our last remote learning day for our students is Friday, June 5. When we started our school year, we could never have imagined that we would conclude the year in this capacity.  We remain committed to making the best of our last weeks together and appreciate your tremendous efforts to support learning at home.

Adventures in Learning--Program Adjustment & Refund Information
Based on available public health information, we have determined that it is necessary to redesign our longstanding summer program, Adventures in Learning. While we will not be able to offer the program in its in-person format, we are committed to providing remote learning alternatives for students.  We appreciate our summer educators' creativity for rethinking remote course offerings that include engaging enrichment options.  By mid-May, we will share class schedules and registration information for the remote learning version of Adventures in Learning, which will run from July 6-24 with 30-minute sessions. This change in programming also allows our District's staff to dedicate summer time to planning for our fall 2020 transition to a new school year.

If you registered for Adventures in Learning, your registration will be automatically cancelled and refunded to you via your original method of payment beginning at the end of next week. Please allow at least 3-5 business days for the refund to process. If your credit card has expired or you have any questions or concerns about your refund, please contact [email protected].

Student Material Pick-Up
A letter was shared on April 30 with details on how to pick up materials belonging to your child(ren) the week of May 4-8.   Please take a moment to read the letter for detailed instructions on this process . Note that there will not be another opportunity for families to come to the buildings before the end of the 2019-2020 school year and the District will not be able to accommodate alternative pick-up times outside of what is designated.   Pickup is limited to  one adult representative from each family and this adult representative will need to be wearing a face mask per the Governor's order.

Also, while we appreciate the desire to return items such as books to our schools, at this time we do not have the capacity to safely accept these materials. We request that you kindly hold on to any school-owned items until we are able to return to our buildings.

Social and Emotional Learning Resources
Our partners at Family Action Network (FAN) are hosting a webinar, in partnership with New Trier High School. Author and psychologist Lisa Damour, Ph.D. , will be doing a live webinar , "Managing Stress, Anxiety, and Parenting Under Covid-19," Tuesday, May 5, 7:00-8:00 PM. After her presentation, she will be interviewed by Denise Dubravec, Principal at NTHS' Winnetka campus. Dr. Damour is a frequent contributor to The New York Times and has most recently written articles supporting parents as they navigate life during the pandemic .

Additionally The Winnetka Public Schools social workers have compiled some new resources for you , and you can access additional information on our  Family Resources webpage  , which we will continue to update.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate our final month of school and plan for the summer together. I know we will all do our best to support our students as we celebrate many year-end traditions and prepare for transitions. Please enjoy the weekend and keep up the incredible work you are doing as a parent and community member.

Sincerely,

Trisha Kocanda
Superintendent
