National Cybersecurity Awareness Month 2019
|
Held every October, National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) is a collaborative effort between government and industry to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity and to ensure that all Americans have the resources they need to be safer and more secure online.
NCSAM 2019 emphasizes personal accountability and stresses the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity at home and in the workplace. This year's overarching message -
Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. - will focus on key areas including citizen privacy, consumer devices, and e-commerce security.

HITEQ Cybersecurity and Compliance Workshop

The West Virginia Primary Care Association (WVPCA), in conjunction with the HITEQ Center, invites you to attend a one-day workshop focusing on Healthcare Cybersecurity and Compliance, as well as Information Security policy and procedure development.
This event will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2019 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at TC Energy Building, Room 1178, Charleston, WV.

Uniform Data System Training on November 5th

The WVPCA, in conjunction with HRSA/BPHC will be hosting the 2019 UDS Training, presented by Ellen Radis of AHP. This event will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at the TCEnergy Building (1700 MacCorkle Avenue, SE, Charleston) as well as via WebEx. Registration is at 8:00 am with the session beginning at 8:30 am.

School-Based Health Alliance Announces Upcoming Adolescent Health ECHO Clinic
|
Th
e School-Based Health Alliance, with funding from the Bureau of Primary Health Care National C
ooperative Agreement (NCA), is accepting applications for its Adolescent Health ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) program.
Through eight, 1.5-hour, CE-accredited sessions, the Adolescent Health ECHO program joins colleagues nationwide in learning more about adolescent health in an innovative tele-mentoring model of health care education. Lead by a multidisciplinary team of adolescent health providers and professionals, providers and staff participate in bi-weekly virtual sessions of evidence-based didactics and patient case presentations.
Participants and faculty will explore a number of topics centered on Adolescent Friendly Environments, Preventive Well Care, Behavioral Health, and Sexual/Reproduction Health. Such topics include cre
ating an adolescent-centered experience, risk assessment counseling, opioid use disorders, and inclusive and affirming care. Each clinic combines brief evidence-based didactics from faculty with de-identified case presentations from participants. All adolescent health providers and staff can participate at no cost.

As people watched Hurricane Irma rage across their TV screens toward the Florida panhandle in 2017, the Cape Coral Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) prepared for action.
Key to their efforts? Information from the U.S. Census Bureau, including stats gleaned from the most recent census.
The team used population maps derived from Census Bureau data to identify distribution points for supplies - and to send wheelchair-accessible vans to pick up mostly older residents who initially wanted to stay put and ride out the storm.
The 2019 theme is "Prepared, Not Scared." It's important for people to remember that a key to disaster prep is responding to the 2020 Census, which can lead to more effective and efficient emergency response times and rescue operations, and allocation of funds for rebuilding communities. Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation opens Bridge of Hope Scholarship for fall Applicants

The Bridge of Hope Fund is a Donor-Advised Fund at The Greater Kanawha Valley
Foundation
. This scholarship opportunity is for a person in addiction recovery who is
interested
in pursuing a training or education program. They must have completed a recovery program and demonstrate good standing in regards to the recovery program's after care requirements. Applicants must be actively participating in a mutual aid group or alternative peer support group.
The application is available on the Greater Kawnaha Valley Foundation website, under
Special Initiatives. The application period is open until November 15, 2019.

WVDHHR's Statewide Therapist Loan Repayment (STLR)
Webpage now has a webinar presentation in addition to the applications, which includes:
- The Practitioner Application is for those master's level psychology, social work, or counseling students who have graduated between May 1, 2018 - August 31, 2019
- The Student Application is for those master's level psychology, social work, or counseling students who are currently in their final academic year and expect to graduate by August 31, 2020
- For these student applications, there's also an Educational Status form that the applicant must have the school complete and return to us.
The opportunity can provide up to $20,000 of student loan repayment in exchange for a 2 year service obligation at a qualified treatment provider in the state of WV for any students who qualify. And please feel free to email me should any questions arise.

The Center for Active WV Offering Mini grants for physical activity
|
The Center for ActiveWV is launching a new Grant Program. West Virginia University College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, through a partnership with West Virginia Health Promotion and Chronic Disease, is funding projects statewide to increase physical activity. These one-time mini-grants range from $1000-$5000.
Successful mini-grant applications will propose a plan to improve the health of communities in West Virginia through increased opportunities for physical activity in the following areas:
- Increase physical activity opportunities for children throughout the school day and beyond
- Increase and/or improve pedestrian and bike infrastructure within West Virginia
- Implement programming and/or create opportunities for physical activity through clinical practice and community outreach

Round 2: Medline Community Impact Grant Program for Community Health Centers.
Medline is pleased to announce the second round of the Community Impact Grant Program for Community Health Centers. Medline and the Medline Foundation will award results-focused grants addressing prevalent healthcare challenges that help improve patient care or enhance the quality of life for their patients and the community at-large. Each grant will be capped at $10,000 and the total will not exceed $50,000.
Earlier this year we launched the first cycle of the Community Health Center grant program and awarded five CHCs each a $10,000 grant to fund essential programs throughout the US. Totaling $100,000 over the two cycles, these grants will help address funding shortages at these vital care settings, where many underinsured and uninsured patients receive care. The second round of the 2019 Community Impact Grant cycle is now open and the application deadline to apply is November 1, 2019. Applications may be submitted at any time during this funding cycle. Applications must be completed in full and submitted online to be considered. Submitting an online application does not guarantee funding.
The 2019 grants recipients will be announced on or before December 6, 2019.

Non-profit organizations. Must be based in the US and its territories.

Advancing HIV Screening and Treatment: A Health Center's Experience
|
Health centers play a key role in ending the HIV epidemic. ECRI Institute, on HRSA's behalf, will host a webinar featuring a speaker from Fenway Health, a HRSA-funded health center. Fenway Health is well-known for delivering comprehensive care to people living with HIV.
The speaker will discuss the organization's approaches to providing screening, comprehensive care, and treatment to people living with HIV, including:
- The roles of health centers and free clinics in HIV diagnosis, prevention, and early treatment.
- Practical strategies for making HIV screening and early treatment programs operational.
- Potential challenges encountered and lessons learned.

Join a Postgraduate Residency Learning Collaborative
|
Community Health Center, Inc., (CHCI, a HRSA-funded NCA) will lead an eight-month learning collaborative to help health centers implement a postgraduate residency training program. Content will include transformational strategies and coaching support provided through:
- Videoconference learning sessions with 10-12 primary care teams across the country.
- Bi-weekly coach mentoring provided by CHCI's certified coach mentors.
- Access to web-based resources.

Auto-HPSA Scores: There Might be an Opportunity to Improve Scores
|
Last month, HRSA updated its IT system to replace all pre-existing auto-HPSA scores with the data included in Preview #9, which health centers received in early August. However, there are still opportunities for health centers to increase their auto-HPSA scores before they are "locked" on Feb. 1, 2020. These opportunities are discussed in the Next Steps in Auto-HPSA Update Process and the HRSA FAQs available on the NACHC Shortage Designation webpage. |
Census Takers in Your Neighborhood

You may begin to notice census workers in your neighborhood. This is a normal part of preparations for the 2020 Census. Census Bureau employees are also in the community to continue collecting information for the American Community Survey and other ongoing surveys.

Updated Flu Vaccine Recommendations for 2019-2020 Season
|
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (CDC ACIP) has shared
updated
flu vaccine recommendations
for the 2019-20 season. The committee still recommends healthcare providers offer flu shots to everyone six months and older with no contraindications by the end of October. The updated recommendations reflect the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) changes for the age indication of the Afluria Quadrivalent vaccine and approved dosages of the Fluzone Quadrivalent vaccine.

The WVPCA has retained the law firm of Jackson Kelly, PLLC to provide legal guidance to the WV Primary Care Association and its members.
Jackson Kelly attorneys provide limited consultation to all members of the WVPCA at no charge, as part of the WVPCA contract. There is no limit to the number of calls which any member may make. All inquiries within the scope of professional competence of firm attorneys will be addressed. Inquiries which require expertise not available through the firm will be promptly identified and, when requested, Jackson Kelly will assist in referring the matter to accounting firms, insurance agents, or others as circumstances warrant.
All inquiries, responses and consultation services provided by the firm lawyers will be provided without additional charge beyond the retainer amount, except for matters which require formal opinions, representation of record in litigation, transactional work, e.g. the purchase or sale of real property, or matters which require continued representation, research or consultation beyond a single inquiry or document review.
