Iowa State University educates more Iowans than any other institution. In fact, more than half of Iowa State's student population is from Iowa with 19,022 in-state students, representing all 99 counties. Additionally, Cyclones make up the largest alumni body in Iowa with well over 100,000 alumni contributing to the economic health of the state.

As Iowa's only land-grant university, Iowa State connects not only with alumni, but with all Iowans through ISU Extension and Outreach's 99 county campus. Each year ISU Extension and Outreach directly benefits more than 1 million people and is responsible for more than 5 million educational interactions. We cover the entire lifespan from the youngest to oldest Iowans with a focus on feeding people, keeping them healthy, empowering communities, and turning the world over to the next generation better than we found it.

That's not the only way Iowa State is building a strong Iowa.

Iowa State was recently selected to lead a national institute to work on solutions to a major public health issue - drug-resistant bacteria or superbugs that don't react to antibiotics. This is a major global public health concern. At least 2 million people in the U.S. become sick every year by drug-resistant bacteria. These superbugs also harm animals and the environment, costing multi-billion dollars annually in economic losses. The institute housed at Iowa State is building partnerships to find solutions.

The ISU Research Park is closely connected with the university, but operates independently to help tenants reach proprietary goals, and assist companies in a setting that encourages entrepreneurial ventures and working relationships with Iowa State students and researchers. The more than 87 companies/research centers located at ISU Research Park employ 2,155 people and account for more than $100 million annually in economic activity.

The Center for Industrial Research and Services, Iowa State's science-focused business assistance program, is a key problem solver for Iowa businesses. Last year more than 1,700 Iowa businesses in 95 counties received assistance from CIRAS. These companies reported back a combined economic impact of more than $620 million with nearly 5,000 jobs added or retained.
