Cypress Creek High School

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you enjoy your Valentine's Day this Thursday and please remember that there is no school next Monday, Feb. 18th due to the President's Day holiday. Classes will resume on schedule Tuesday, Feb. 19th.

This coming Friday we will be distributing third quarter student progress reports. If you have a student at Cypress Creek, please take the time to look over their results as soon as possible. Kindly note that we offer free tutoring throughout the week for any student needing a little extra help (below).

We still need a number of Cypress Creek parents/guardians to complete this year's Parent Survey. We use this feedback as part of our school improvement plans. If this applies to your household, please take a few moments to complete the anonymous survey this week. Thank you!

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Feba Mathew (Class of 2019)
Feba Mathew, a CCHS Senior in the IB Programme, was recognized as a 2019 Mayor's MLK Youth Humanitarian at the Disney Contemporary Resort on Saturday, February 9. The event honored twenty-four local high school students on behalf of City of Orlando Mayor, Buddy Dyer. Feba is a two-year honoree and was one of four students who were specially honored at the event for receiving the prestigious award more than once.

Olivia (Class of 2020)

"Olivia and the Rookies"

Olivia is an 11th grade student who is visually impaired and has been learning braille for a few years so that she can have a backup reading method if she needs it in the future. Olivia participated in the Braille Challenge on Friday, Feb. 8 in Orlando and took home first prize (a $75 Target gift card) in a group of students called "Rookies." (The Rookie group is made up of students who are beginning braille students or of students who are learning braille as a secondary literacy medium.)

* The Braille Challenge is a national program of the Braille Institute hosted by regional schools and agencies. It is the only national braille literacy competition of its kind in the country, and is specifically designed to challenge and reward students who are blind or visually impaired for their study of braille, which is essential for their future academic and employment success. Regional students who score among the top 50 nationally are invited to the Braille Institute in Los Angeles for a final competition!

Rigor in the Classroom
Accounting with Ms. Whitney

The Accounting Program has spent time last week playing the CASHFLOW board game. Using a practical game like this, they have been learning how to manage their finances by investing in long-term assets such as stocks, mutual funds and real estate that generate passive income, while managing the everyday challenges of unexpected expenses.

Each student has their own "profession" with expected monthly income. They must maintain an income statement, personal balance sheet and of course track their ongoing cash flow. This game was designed Robert Kiyosaki, author of the bestselling personal finance book of all time, Rich Dad Poor Dad to help teach personal finance in an engaging manner.

Talented Bears: Meet Our Champions in Art!
"2019 Face Off / Who is My Hero?" with Mr. Marin's Art Class

Background:
Like all students in any art class, this amazing group of students will fall on a wide spectrum of artistic ability. Some students won't possess the fine motor skills necessary to make typical grade level work. On the other hand, some students with autism will be the most talented students you'll ever teach. It's important to understand where your students' skills are and meet them there. Beautiful things happens when we open the window of Art expression to them, they live, laugh and love it!!!!

My Champions in Art!!!!!

STEM
Robotics
Keeping our campus clean - with science! A little help from the community is needed to continue forward with the project.

Help me give my student the basic ingredients he can use to assemble his vision - the Trash Bot!

One of my advanced robotics students is working on a special project - the Trash Bot! This student has put in countless hours learning 3D modeling, 3D printing, and Arduino programming. While he keeps busy by entering local area robotics contests, he would like to use his skills to give back to the school and potentially the local community.

~ Mr. Oswald

The trash bot will utilize different sensors and cameras to detect trash and avoid obstacles.

How it works: The trash bot will autonomously pick up garbage left behind by students on campus using a lift arm and claw. The trash bot will have a built in GPS to keep in within campus limits. The base of the robot will be a pre-built r/c crawler. Everything will be run by a raspberry pi 3. The robot will traverse the campus in the morning, after lunches, and after school searching for items it recognizes as trash and picking those items up. The robot will have a built-in alarm system to prevent theft or vandalism.

* Mr. Oswald will only receive his materials if this project is fully funded by June 4.
