Each year at Purim, we send a mystery gift to each Or Shalom household as a way of reconnecting and showing appreciation.  According to the Book of Esther, Purim is a time to give gifts to friends and provide support for those in need through the practice of Mishloach Manot, 'sending of portions'.

You can send Mishloach Manot to individuals,  the entire Or Shalom community, or  support Or Shalom's social action work in new giving levels!

Forms have been sent in the mail, or you may fill out a form online
Contact the office if you would like to help distribute bags!  It's fun and a great way to connect with members.
Reclaim Our Vote Phone-Banking
Wednesday, February 19, 2-5 pm

We are working with Reclaim Our Vote to phone citizens in vulnerable populations who have been systematically removed from voter rolls--and may not even know it. On our calls we will give people the tools they need to re-register and reclaim their voices in our democracy.

Join us at Or Shalom from 2-5 on Wednesday, January 19. Brings three things with you:
  • a fully-charged phone
  • a fully-charged laptop or tablet
  • a headset/headphones with microphone for your phone
Please RSVP

Friday, February 21 at 6:30pm

This year, the entire community is invited to our new member welcome dinner. Help show those who have joined Or Shalom over the past year what an engaging and interesting community they are now part of. We will share a meal, conversation, a little Or Shalom lore, and a brief service to welcome the Sabbath.

The meal will be hosted by Or Shalom, but please RSVP  by Feb 20th to let us know you are coming!
Spiritual Exchange With Grace Tabernacle
Sunday, February 23 at 10am at Grace Tabernacle
Sunday, March 29 at 1pm at Or Shalom

Join us as we deepen our connection to a sister community, Grace Tabernacle Community Church. Grace Tabernacle is a progressive, African-American, evangelical church. Leaders and members from Grace have joined in the past for our seder and other events.

This spring, we will continue the spiritual exchange as Rabbi Katie preaches at Grace Tabernacle ( 1221 Oakdale Avenue in the Bayview) on Sunday morning, February 23, and as we convene a jointly-led Torah and bible study session on Sunday afternoon, March 29, at 1:00-3:00 pm at Or Shalom.
Unity Forum: Dismantling Racism
Sunday, Feb 23 at 1:00 pm at Calvary Presbyterian Church

Or Shalom members are invited to the second in a series of forums on racial and economic justice, co-sponsored by Or Shalom. The forums will use documentary film and other media to spark discussions in an effort to inform and build bridges and community for the purpose of dismantling white supremacy and racism.

This second forum will begin with excerpts from the film "When They See Us."  The third forum is planned for April at Or Shalom.  Admission is free, but p lease RSVP .
4th Friday Shabbat
"Choosing Life," with Susan Levine
6:30 pm, Friday, Feb 28

After a Shabbat service, we will hear from our friend and member, Susan Levine. Susan will talk about how a life full of optimism and success could also be one of extreme sadness. She will try and answer the question, "How can someone who seems to have everything want to kill themself?" She will discuss what led to her suicide attempts, and what role Judaism has played in her recovery.

The oneg will be generously hosted by Pat Skala and Corey Weinstein, in memory of Pat's mother, Dorothy Skala.
     Sanctuary Shabbat Dinner
In Member Homes, Friday, March 6 at 6:30pm

Gather with friends for a Shabbat dinner and a discussion of the New Sanctuary Movement and what it would mean for Or Shalom to join and declare ourselves a Sanctuary Synagogue. We will match up hosts and guests for an evening that is sure to be a sociable and meaningful way to learn about this possibility and give your input.

RSVP here to host or be a guest.
