Massasoit Land Deed Saved from Flames - 1872

Around 1872, Lusanna Mitchell sold her house to Henry Hobart. Her house had once belonged to Judge Nahum Mitchell, her husband's half- brother, and there were many papers of his in the house still.

One evening, Judge Benjamin Harris called upon her to find her in front of the fireplace throwing bundles of papers in. When he expressed concern that the papers might be important, she said she did not care; they were old papers of the Judge's and that she had taken care of them for years and now she was moving and not taking them with her.

Knowing that Judge Mitchell once had the original Ousamequin's Deed and thought he lost it, Judge Harris took an armful of bundles of paper and headed home.

In one of the bundles he found a folded paper marked "Copy of Indian Deed". When opened, he found the original folded inside the copy. Very excited that he saved it from flames, he placed it between two sheets of glass and donated it to the Old Bridgewater Historical Society, which has it still.

Peace.

“It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”
~ Eleanor Roosevelt

“No person, no place, and no thing has any power over us, for 'we' are the only thinkers in our mind. When we create peace and harmony and balance in our minds, we will find it in our lives.” ~ Louise L. Hay

“When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.”
~ Jimi Hendrix

“When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed.” ~ Fred Rogers
I wish you, and our world, Peace. ~ Jacquie
