Professional Pharmacy Fraternity
Greetings Sisters!!

2019 has surely flown by so fast.  I cannot believe it is already December and Christmas is around the corner.  This has truly been a busy year for many of us.  We have sisters who have been traveling around the world, building and buying new houses, getting married, having children, changing jobs, building their business or brand, publishing articles, writing books, taking on new responsibilities and having new experiences.

The workforce in pharmacy is changing, companies are downsizing, pharmacist hours and store hours are being cut.  All of these can be a stressor for anyone.  But we have to be vigilant and prepared so that we can withstand those challenges.  As a leader we also need to be looking for ways to develop and improve ourselves.  So in meeting with my supervisor she had indicated that she had been reading a book each quarter and reviewing it with her supervisor.  She had mentioned that she was beginning to read a book called "5 Things Successful People Do Before 8 A.M." written by Terri Savelle Foy.  I had not heard of this book so I decided that I was going to read it as well. Terri shares in her book the habits of successful people as well as her own personal habits that took her from an undisciplined life to living a life filled with purpose, self-discipline and God-given success.  In the book she discusses her 5 morning habits for a successful life, and she shares other leaders' top 5 morning habits.

The 5 Things Successful People Do Before 8 A.M. are:
Habit #1:  Pray and Meditate
  • Terri talks about how she had no idea she was afraid of her own thoughts.  She states, "Solitude is the most important part of pursuing God's dream for your life.  This is where you gain direction, obtain clarity for your vision, receive courage to overcome obstacles, and become fearless in the face of adversity to go after your dreams."
  • In the bestselling book, The Magic of Thinking Big, David Schwartz says, "Successful people in any field take time out to confer with (themselves).  Leaders use solitude to put the pieces of the problem together to work out solutions, to plan and in one phrase, to do their super-thinking.  Many people fail to tap their creative leadership power because they confer with everybody and everything else but themselves."
  • While you are in your moment of solitude you should keep a journal to record your thoughts, ideas and to plan your future.
Habit #2:  Read
  • Terri points out that "75% of self-made millionaires have reported to reading at least two books per month."
  • The reading habits of successful people
    • o   They are intentional about reading
    • o   They are selective about what they read
    • o   They read to grow
    • o   They read to save time and money
    • o   They seize every moment to learn
    • o   They read to be inspired
    • o   They apply what they read
Habit #3:  Listen to Audios
  • They listen to audiobooks in their commute to work.  Some leaders listen to faith-building audios.  Some also listen to podcasts and audiobooks
Habit #4:  Write (and Review) Your Dreams and Goals
  • Visualize your future
  • Write it down
  • Make a vision board or vision book
  • Take action on your dreams
  • Believe
Habit #5:  Exercise and make it a habit
  • There are 5 benefits of exercise
    • o   Exercise makes you happier
    • o   Exercise makes you sleep better
    • o   Exercise reduces stress
    • o   Exercise gives you a boost of energy
    • o   Exercise builds your confidence
As 2019 is coming close to an end and the holidays are coming upon us,  I hope that you spend time with family and friends and cherish those moments.  As you will see time is of the essence and it is one precious thing that you can never get back.  I wish you all a Merry Christmas, happy holidays and Happy New Year.

I hope you enjoy this edition of our Alumni News and don't forget to send me your updates, questions or your requests by emailing me at [email protected]

ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting

The 54 th ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition was held in Las Vegas, NV, at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. Lambda Kappa Sigma was represented in the Exhibit Hall once again this year by Grand President, Chris Grass; Grand Secretary, Stephanie Mrozek; Grand Treasurer, Melissa O'Brien; Past Grand President, Sandy Mullen; and Erin Rogala, Director of Member Services. LKS was located at booth #2246 right near the other pharmacy fraternities.
Over 120 members were able to stop by and catch up with the booth staff. It was great to see students from different chapters mingling and sharing ideas with each other. The comfortable furniture in the booth made for a great place for tired students and alumni to sit and take a break from the busy day. Thank you to all the students and alumni that stopped by to say hello!
A Letter From Trust Liaison Committee Chair, Jeanne VanTyle:

Dear Friends,

As 2019 nears an end, I write to update you on the activities of the Educational Trust which benefits our collegiate and graduate student members. I would like you to consider as an individual or perhaps as an alumni chapter to contribute funds to the Educational Trust.

In 2019, the Educational Trust Liaison Committee voted to award a total of $14,000 in educational grants to deserving members, during the 2020 grant application cycle. The Dr. B. Olive Cole grant is awarded to a member who is pursuing a Master   '   s or PhD. It is a $2000 grant. The remainder of Educational grants are for $1000 each.

It is primarily through member contributions that the principal of the Trust will grow. Donations in the form of special tributes, recognitions, or memorials are welcome.  Perhaps an alumni chapter can partner with a collegiate chapter to jointly raise awareness and funding?

As our fund grows, the ability of LKS to award more educational grants will also increase. The Blue and Gold Triangle lists the winners each year, and we strive to contact previous winners to ask what receiving an educational grant meant to them. If you are a previous winner, please feel free to send an email to Erin Rogala, Director of Member Services, and let us know.

Contributions can be easily accomplished by using the Member Portal. [lks.org à Educational Trust à Donate]. The Educational Trust is established as a 501(c)(3) public charity. You can also mail a check (made payable to the LKS Educational Trust) and send it to LKS, PO Box 570; Muskego, WI 53150-0570.

Fraternally,

Jeanne Hawkins VanTyle, Phi
