Registration is now open for the 2021 National Jamboree which will be held on July 21-30, 2021 at the Summit Bechtel reserve (SBR) National Scout High Adventure Base in Glen Jean, West Virginia, USA.
The theme of the Jamboree is “Face the Challenge.” Held every four years, the National Scout Jamboree is an amazing opportunity for participants, volunteers, and visitors to experience the best of Scouting, all in one place. Features include; one of the longest zip line courses in North America, a world-class skateboard park, ATV courses, treetop canopy tours, rock climbing, patch trading, stadium shows, and much more!

Are you ready to Face the Challenge? The National Jamboree Executive Committee is pleased to announce that registration is now open for older youth and adults to participate as Jamboree Service Team (JST) members. Program, medical, logistics, and administrative options are available to those with vocational expertise, skills or a desire to positively impact Scouts and guests attending Scouting’s premier celebration.
There will be three JST sessions during the 2021 National Scout Jamboree to allow flexibility to desired applicants. Selected volunteers will be able to select a session that best suits their schedule when applying to serve at the Jamboree. The following sessions will apply:
- Session 1 (July 17-24, 2021)
- Session 2 (July 24-31, 2021)
- Session 3 (July 17-31, 2021)

Annual Pio Pico Pushcart Derby
February 22, 2020
|
This Pushcart Derby event will be held on February 22, 2020, from 7:00 am – 3:00 pm, and is open to all registered Scouts, ranking from Cub Scouts to Troop level, and even our smallest of cubbies participate too. Our Lions compete in the event with a Boxcar Derby of their own. Each Unit Leaders is given a leader's guide with instructions on how to assemble and create boxcars.
The Pushcart Derby is made of Grand Prix, relay, and drag race, along with a parallel parking contest. The competition is run by a division of rank, and it is a timed race event. The winners of each rank are awarded with medallions. Registration cost is $15 per person.

Post 558 Infantry Explorers are proud to host an exciting opportunity for Scouts to experience military life, build respect for the US armed forces, gain valuable life skills and discipline. From the first formation, until you are dismissed you will undergo realistic military training and gain valuable knowledge that will help you build character whether you decide to pursue a military career or not.
Location for this event is JFTB Los Alamitos, CA. Dates are February 29, 2020 - March 1, 2020.

Gathering of Eagles

The next Gathering of Eagles event will take place on Wednesday, March 12, 2020 (New Date), from 5:30 to 8:30 PM at the office of our Greater Los Angeles Area Council Board Member and Former President Robb Scoular, Dentons US LLP, 601 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017. The cost is $10. (No uniforms and adult beverages will be served.)

The San Gabriel Valley District is hosting the Annual Cub Games and Family Campout from March 20-22, 2020, at Firestone Scout Reservation. Please make this great event a unique experience for your pack, den, and family by including it in your pack's calendar.
The theme is "Calling All Superheroes!!!" and activities will support that theme - from costumes and campsite decoration to the types of games and activities planned for the Scouts, parents, and family members.

68th Annual Eagle Scout Banquet
April 23, 2020

The 68th Annual Eagle Scout Recognition Banquet will be held at the Quiet Cannon Resort in Montebello on Thursday evening, April 23, 2020. We will be honoring our 2019 Eagle Scouts from the Greater Los Angeles Area Council.
Our Featured Speaker will be Todd Houston, who is an Eagle Scout, amputee, author, world record holder, and inventor who has committed his life to helping others do their best.
Invitations to be a sponsor will be sent out and available on the council website late February. Your support is essential to the success of this event, and the recognition of the accomplishments of our newest Eagle Scouts. We hope you will be able to attend this year's banquet.

Belcher Foundation Eagle Scout Scholarship
|
The Donald D and M. Marie Belcher Charitable Foundation has established a special scholarship for GLAAC Eagle Scouts who have plans to attend a four-year college or university following high graduation.
The funding will be a two-year $7,000 college scholarship awarded each year in the amount of $3,500 for the first year, renewable for the second year, with at least 24 college credits completed and college grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or above.

It’s time to kick off the Annual Fundraising Campaign for the Greater Los Angeles Area Council. This campaign will help us raise funds necessary to provide a quality program. Although we will no longer make Units presentations, the GLAAC Annual Fundraising Campaign will continue our effort to raise the needed dollars to support youth in our communities.
The Greater Los Angeles Area Council:
- Raises 100% of its dollars locally
- Receives no National Boy Scout funding
- Uses ALL of the dollars raised to support youth in our community

The Boy Scouts of American has had a long history of our involvement in the area of conservation. Since, 1917, about 1,100 Hornaday medals have been awarded. The Hornaday Awards program were begun by Dr. William T. Hornaday, an ardent conservationist and director of the New York Zoological Park and founder of the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., who wanted to recognize Scouts who undertook and completed truly exceptional conservation projects.
The fundamental purpose of the Hornaday Awards program is to encourage learning by the participants and to increase public awareness about natural resource conservation. Understanding and practicing sound stewardship of natural resources and environmental protection strengthens Scouting's emphasis on respecting the outdoors.

Conservation Good Turn Award
|
Overview
The purpose of this recognition is to encourage packs, troops, teams, and crews to join with conservation and or environmental organizations (federal, state, local, or private) to carry out a Conservation Good Turn in their home communities.
Who Can Earn This Award?
Youth, adult members and all Scout type units may earn this recognition.
How To Get the Award
Before you begin to earn this recognition, contact Ross Arnold, the GLAAC Hornaday Committee Chair to see if this project qualifies for this recognition. He may be reached by email at rossarnold1213@gmail.com or by phone at 323 605-2740. After completing the project(s), the Scout leader needs to complete the Conservation Good Turn application, which may be found on the council website under “Camping” under “Hornaday Awards” under “Conservation Good Turn Award.” Complete the application and submit it to Ross Arnold and he will deliver it to the council office for processing. After the application is processed, the certificate will be sent to the unit leader for presentation. Individual patches may be purchased in the Scout Shop.

Troop 351 Seeks More Adventures

Preparing to kick off its next 100 years, the troop — the oldest of San Marino’s handful of Boy Scout units — plans to uphold its reputation of emphasizing the high-adventure aspect of scouting, and is well on its way to launching its inaugural girls’ troop to join the boys on those outdoor exploits. The troop’s emphasis on adventure — the weekend campouts, the daring rock climbing, the mountainous trailblazing and even the surfing — and its accommodation of members’ extracurricular activities have helped draw a particular crew of young men to the group throughout its years.

Duarte Troop 185 Restores a Trail
A Scouting Story

Scouts BSA Troop 185 in Duarte, CA, is a very active troop and dedicated to the slogan of “Do a Good Turn Daily.” On this cold winter day, their good turn was to partner with the US Forestry Department to clear and restore a trail that was devastated by the recent snow, rain, and windstorms; perform trail and stream restoration to prevent unwanted erosion; and thin the overgrown vegetation and invasive species of plants to reduce the risk of wildfire.

South Bay’s Troop 713
A Scouting Story
|
Manhattan Beach native Christian Olsen was there at Camp Emerald Bay, on Catalina’s west end, with other members of Boy Scout Troop 713, which draws from the Beach Cities. Along with the camp’s slate of land activities, Olsen and his fellow troop members made time for snorkeling. During one of these sojourns in the sea, Olsen stumbled into a thick patch of kelp. Vine-like strands spiraled around his ankle. With the circulating movement of the ocean current slowly drawing him parallel to the shore, he felt as if someone, or something, were trying to drag him under.

Join In2Deep Diving, and let's go scuba diving at Camp Cherry Valley. We offer a 1/2 day "try scuba" program (called Discover Scuba Diving) as well as guided dives for certified divers. We even have a week-long PADI scuba certification program for both Scouts and adults!
