SAT Test for Seniors
Sanborn is offering an opportunity for Seniors to take the SAT for free on October 14th. We will be offering the exam in person at the high school and all seniors are expected to participate; however, you can opt your child out of the exam. If you would like to opt out, please complete the form using the button below. We will have more information about expectations for being in the building as we get closer to the day.

New Chromebooks Are Finally In!
Student Interest Corner
Hi!

My name is Katie Meuse, and I am a junior this year. I have a wonderful family and lots of friends, and I also have Down syndrome. Sometimes having DS bothers me, but mostly I am happy and proud of everything I can do. I turned 16 in June, and got my first job at Acio’s pizza shop in Newton Junction. I work hard folding and stacking pizza boxes, restocking sodas, and labeling items. My big sister Jessica works there too, and it is a lot of fun.

I also want to let you know that October is Down syndrome Awareness Month! Every year, people around the world celebrate and hold fundraisers for Down syndrome groups in their area. This year, Sanborn has formed a team to raise money for the New Hampshire Down Syndrome Association, and we will be hosting a Down syndrome walk on Sunday, October 11 at noon on the SRHS track. You can check out our fundraising page here

We would love it if you can come cheer us on!

Thank you,

Katie
Upcoming Changes to Our Remote Learning Bell Schedule
SoRock’s Youth in Action club is off to a great start in 20/21! This week our students came up with the idea of a weekly campaign to get important messages out to their peers during these extraordinary times. Their first message is to check on your friends weekly, making sure to take the time to discuss both the high and low points. They feel that reaching out via snap chat, phone/facetime, texting or a socially distanced meeting with masks are all good ways to remind peers that they are not alone and that there are people there who care and are willing to listen.

If you or your student are interested in joining Youth In Action, we are currently meeting via zoom on Mondays during FLT. Email sorocknhcc@gmail.com or cscott@sau17.org for a zoom link.
School Counseling Corner
Hopefully your children are settling into their schedules. It is important for parents and students to remember that any changes made to schedules after October 1 will result in a withdraw pass (WP) or a withdraw fail (WF) on a student’s transcript. If you notice your child is struggling in a class, please reach out to the teacher. We have many opportunities for students to receive support and intervention built into our schedule and their teacher will be able to have a conversation with you and your child to determine which option might be the best choice.

The Senior college application process is in full swing with many opportunities available for support as well. Seniors have all been invited to a Google Classroom where lots of information is available. Seniors can find checklists to help keep them organized and links to various tools. There is also information on how to sign up for college labs (direct support from the counselors on searching for schools and completing the application). In addition, we are offering workshops on the Common Application Essay for our seniors who have taken their senior English class through a local community college. The workshop is being run by an English teacher and a school counselor.

Paying for college is always a stressor. On October 8th, the NH Higher Education Association Foundation will be presenting their Financial Aid Workshop. This virtual event will be hosted in a similar fashion to the Parent Post-Secondary Night that was hosted in September. Parents of seniors will be able to watch the event on Youtube. More information will be sent out as we get closer to the date.

Finally, SRHS has started a mentoring program- Connections. Every student was asked to identify 10 staff members that they would be interested in having as their mentor. Students were then assigned to one of these staff members. Staff will be using advisory time to check in once a week with their mentees (formal Advisory will now only be held on Mondays) and these check ins will continue during the school year whether we are in person or remote.

As always, please reach out to your child’s counselor if you have any concerns for your child.
Upcoming Changes to Our Remote Learning Bell Schedule
Columbus Day Holiday Week: October 12-16

There will be no school on Monday, October 12. For this week, Friday will be a "grey day" with periods 1, 3, 4, and 8 running (in addition to advisory and FLT). Also this week, we will be administering the SAT to seniors on Wednesday 10/14. Depending on how many seniors elect to take the SAT exam, which will be offered in-person, some classes for grades 9-11 may not offer a live session that day to allow teachers to assist in proctoring the SAT exam. More information will be available soon.

An Update From Southern Rockingham Coalition for Youth (SoROCK)
October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month as well as National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month. October 24th is this years DEA Take Back Day. On this day, between 10-2 you can bring your unused and expired medication to the Fremont PD, Kingston Rite Aid or Newton Transfer Station to be safely disposed of. For medication disposal year round the Kingston PD has a drop box in their lobby. SoRock encourages all households to lock up all potential substances of misuse. If you are in need of a medication lock box, SoRock can provide one to you at no cost. Email sorocknhcc@gmail.com for details.

PTO Clothing & Shoe Donation Bins
When you drop your unwanted clothing and shoes off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students. NOTE: Shoes must go in a separate bin.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
