Cross Country 2018
September 10, 2018

Greetings!

Wow! what a fun day we had at our first meet. We had 135 athletes compete and they all did awesome!! I hope you feel a little more comfortable with the procedure now. Results are posted on our website on the 2018 XC page.

From now on the walk thru will start a 8:15 and the first race at 8:45 starting with the Gremlin girls. All races except the 13-16 will be separate races for girls and boys and will start approximately 20 minutes apart. It is important athletes stay near the Storm area so that they will hear when the coaches are ready for them to start warm up. Usually they will warm up 2 races before their race.

We have many volunteers taking picture during the meet. Please visit our Storm Cross Country Facebook page to see the photos and share yours! We will also be making meet videos of each race and adding to the website. [ Click here to visit our cross country facebook page]
Help at the Meets
As you saw on Saturday we have a very big conference with about 600 athletes competing! We are always in need of help at our tent for check in and other duties at the meet. One thing we always need are Rabbits for you fast running parents and Turtles for the rest of us. If you would like to run with the races as either a turtle or rabbit please let me know. we especially need help for the youth race. Even though they are older they still need encouragement!! Remember all meet officials and workers are volunteers in the VYC!!

XC Meet O'Melveny Park
Our first League meet this Saturday is at O'Melveny Park in Granada Hills. This is a very fun course and the kids love it. The parking is very limited and is mostly on the community streets. Please do not park in the "no parking" areas as the neighborhood is not very happy when we are there. Do not block any driveways when parking in the neighborhood. You will have to walk about a quarter mile or more up to the start, so plan on arriving early.
A Note from Coach Jeremy
Hi Team,

Well, we got the first race out of the way and hopefully that means a lot of the unknowns became known! Racing is the pinnacle of the season. We train hard for so many weeks to build to this point!

I’m sorry I missed that race but I continue to be grateful to all of our coaches who have stepped up to help your athletes have the best experience! My observation from the results is that we have a great range of athletes on the team. As I said at the beginning of the season, we pride ourselves on really serving all abilities. And Saturday’s race showed that. As we begin some more intense, speed and hill training, look at this as the time to make big gains. If you weren’t happy with your performance, there is always next week. If you desire to go to post season you have to be intent on cracking into the top 8 in the conference. There were definitely some athletes missing last week so your true test will start this Saturday at O-Melvany.

Let’s first discuss this week’s schedule and purpose. We will be running both farther and faster this week. Just a couple minutes farther on the long run. Tuesday at COC will be run over the Evil Twin but will be faster and harder up the hill!! Thursday, we will run longer repeats over segments of your race course. The goal being to push yourself both mentally and physically. You can get faster… if you want to!! It will be a little cooler this week so that should help with your effort.

Now let’s discuss O-Melvany. What a great park and course. I know you will all enjoy it. This course doesn’t have big hills but there are gradual hills that make it a tough course. It is probably the most technical course as there are some sharp downhill turns and a lot of exposed rock in sections and ruts in the road. As we go through the walkthrough at the race it will be very important to pay close attention. For parents: parking is always a pain as it seems they only open the main dirt parking lot later in the morning. So.. there is a small asphalt parking lot which will fill up quickly. You must go into the parking lot to see if the next, larger parking lot gate is open. Hopefully it will be. If not, there is only parking on the main road and side roads in the neighborhoods. So plan on giving yourself an extra 10 minutes to walk up to the main home base. Count on 1/3 rd of a mile walking. There is some decent shade but this race is always hot so be prepared.

Assess your nutrition from last week to ensure you improve on that. Gremlins can get away with a bowl of oatmeal. Bantams need a little more. Midgets need a good breakfast plus some electrolyte and maybe granola bar at the race. Youth need all of the above!
Let’s make this a great week. Remember to take care of yourself at home: extra stretching, icing, sleeping, eating, drinking (water)…

See you Tuesday!
