Annual Cider Party for Prospective Students
Our Annual Cider Party for Prospective Students and Alumnae was held on Sunday, Jan. 12th at the home of Laura Selznick '68. It is one of our favorite new year's traditions to welcome incoming Smithies (the class of 2021!) to our local Smith community. We enjoyed meeting prospective students, incoming students, their families, current students and other alumnae over cider and delicious baked goods. We love the story Laura tells each year about the cider ladle passed down to her that we are still lucky enough to be using. We're looking forward to getting to know them better as they join the Smith community!

Upcoming College Events

Evening with President Kathleen McCartney and VP for Alumnae Relations Denise Wingate Materre '74
Smith College has a remarkable story to tell. It is a story of leadership, of women helping women, and of using the power of education and community to make a better world. Smith today is vibrant and innovative. Smith students are bold and creative thinkers. Smith graduates are driven, passionate changemakers. There is a lot to be excited about: the renovation of Neilson Library, Smith's Year on Climate Change initiative, and our Here For Every Voice campaign to raise $75 million in scholarship aid for students.

Book Club Events
On Wednesday, Jan. 15, six of us (plus a visiting cousin) met at Nisha Thatte-Potter's home to discuss Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre-Dame." Most of us managed to finish this very wordy book, and we enjoyed it: vivid and amusing, as well as touching, it gives a kind of sociological portrait of medieval Paris complete with social commentary and well-drawn characters. We had mixed reactions to his extensive discussion of architecture but valued his devotion to the cathedral.

We chose books for March and May, so the upcoming schedule looks like this:

Feb. 19: "The Marriage of Opposites" by Alice Hoffman
March 18: "Bad Blood" by John Carreyrou
April 15: TBD
May 20: "Can't We Talk About Something More Pleasant?" by Roz Chast

If you're interested in joining the book club, please contact  Sally Smith '64  for more information.

Stay tuned for more Smithie events and news next month. If anyone is interested in volunteering with the club, please feel free to reach out to [email protected] ! Thanks!
