Jill Jack Trio
February 22
8pm

Jill Jack’s magical connection to her audience is the result of her generous artistry. By combining her gifts as a conceptual visionary with a warm gathering of musical influences, Jill touches that secret heart of ours with her melodies and lyrics. In her hometown of Detroit, Jill needs no further explanation. She’s been lauded in equal measure to her talents: Since 1997 she’s won 41 Detroit Music Awards in every conceivable category that applies to a singer-songwriter. Much of this provincial success is due to her charming stage presence and emotive songwriting. It’s simply called connecting, and it’s the bounty of a true songwriter open to all of life: her own defeats, victories, hopes dashed, dreams fulfilled, her muse, her loneliness, her misplaced love and her romantic successes. Tickets can be purchased on the website below!

SAFE in Northern Michigan and RISE Otsego project coordinators attend CADCA’S National Leadership Forum to learn new skills to increase substance use prevention efforts
SAFE and RISE project coordinators Susan Pulaski and Sierra Hilt joined more than 3,000 substance use prevention specialists and advocates from throughout the country for CADCA’s (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America's) 30th Annual National Leadership Forum in Washington, DC last week.

CADCA’s Forum covered a wide range of topics – everything from how to prevent prescription misuse to addressing electronic cigarettes use, trending marijuana issues and how to develop policies to reduce underage drinking. SAFE in Northern Michigan has recently impacted the community by adding a “Hidden in Plain Sight” trailer which is set up like a teen bedroom to educate parents on drugs that are trending. SAFE and RISE Otsego representatives met with U.S. Representatives and Senators at the Forum’s Capitol Hill Day event on Wednesday, February 5; and discussed local concerns regarding underage drinking, vaping and youth marijuana use.

Anora O'Connor Join The Boathouse On Lake Charlevoix
Rebecca and Rick Gotts, owners of The Boathouse on Lake Charlevoix, are excited to announce that Anora O'Connor will be taking the helm overseeing the operations of the new venue, rental properties and the Water Street commercial building.

Anora spent the last 13 months creating enthusiasm and momentum at Char-Em United Way. “Spending the last year working in nonprofit has given me a whole new perspective of the needs in our community. Ideally, I will remain involved with CEUW at some capacity because I believe in the mission, values and important work that is being done. With that said, I am super excited to be getting back to my roots in hospitality and working with some pretty amazing people. And It’s just a few blocks from my house to boot. ” Anora said.

When Rebecca and Rick originally purchased the properties, they had big dreams of creating something special for the community as a way to give back. The Boathouse is expected to open its doors in just a few months. This fully renovated event space will be host to weddings and fundraising and corporate events with additional exciting growth on the horizon.
Rebecca shares, “With Anora’s hospitality and leadership background, we are looking forward to building this business into a successful staple in East Jordan. We were thrilled when she accepted our offer to lead this endeavor.”

North Central Michigan College Signs Transfer Agreements with 25 Michigan Universities

Agreements will make it easier for North Central students to transfer to a four-year college or university

Transferring to a four-year college or university from North Central Michigan College will now be even simpler thanks to new transfer agreements signed with 25 Michigan colleges and universities.

“This will benefit our students tremendously,” said Dr. David Roland Finley, president of North Central. “The percentage of North Central students who transfer to a four-year institution has increased over the past five years to approximately 30 percent. This agreement will ensure their seamless transfer for completion of a bachelor’s degree, making it easier for them to reach their academic goals. We believe students get their best start at North Central, and our region — and the entire Tip of the Mitt — benefits as a result.”

Transfer agreements will allow North Central students to transfer more credits to four-year schools in the areas of biology, business, criminal justice and psychology. The new agreements specify major-specific courses that students should complete while enrolled at North Central that are common across all institutions in Michigan. The identification of these courses makes it easier for students to complete essential courses before deciding where to transfer. North Central advisors now have details available for students about which courses they should complete and how those courses apply to degree programs at the participating universities.

The initiative was funded through the Fiscal Year 2018 state budget, which included a one-time appropriation to support this initiative, the redesigned Michigan Transfer Network at http://www.mitransfer.org , work to build stronger math pathways, and efforts to award credit for military experience.

A study conducted by the National Student Clearinghouse found that 52 percent of bachelor’s degree earners in Michigan previously enrolled at a community college, which is higher than the national average of 49 percent. The Michigan Center for Student Success is leading the statewide initiative for the MCCA in partnership with the Michigan Association of State Universities and the Michigan Independent Colleges and Universities. The project continues through fall 2020, and North Central is working on completing additional agreements in other academic program areas. ncmich.edu
