Membership Drive
Last Tuesday, we met our goal for the Spring Membership Drive! Thank you to everyone who contributed for making this campaign a success and funding the programs on WDIY.

On Monday, May 3, NPR celebrates the 50th anniversary of its first broadcast when All Things Considered took to the airwaves on May 3,1971.

All this week, tune in to All Things Considered, weekdays from 4 to 6 p.m., to hear special features that look back on the last half century of NPR reporting.

Our WDIY Board Member of the Month is Doug Dopp. Doug is new to the Board of Directors this year. WDIY Sports presents a special feature on baseball with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs as Steve Aaronson chats with Mike Ventola, Media Relations Manager who details the reasons why last season was cancelled and the plans to reopen Coca-Cola Park safely on Tuesday May 4th for in-person games with COVID-19 precautions, policies, and social distance guidelines.

Michael welcomes Beau Baden of Sherman Street Brewery on Union Blvd. in Allentown to discuss how his varied experience in microbrewing over the last 20 years prepared him to open his own operation. Then, Mike chats with Samantha Younes, part of the family celebrating 40 years of Aladdin Middle Eastern Cuisine in Allentown about how the Valley's exotic tastes have changed for the better, plus her new location for Zahra in the Bethlehem Riverport Market.

The Sound of Metal received six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay (Darius Marder, both categories), Best Actor (Riz Ahmed), Best Supporting Actor (Paul Raci), and Best Sound and Best Film Editing, receiving Oscars for the latter two categories. Paul Willistein of the Lehigh Valley Press reviews the drama.

For this month's first Monday "Decades" theme, you'll hear saxophonists Bobby Watson ('91) and Henry Threadgill (also '91), French horn player John Clark ('81), and guitarist Dave Stryker ('01). Add some vocals from Dee Dee Bridgewater, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and others, plus a not very typical instrument for a jazz recording from Tunisian oud player, Anouar Brahem, and you get the hand-picked two hours that WDIY listeners expect to hear!

Capwell and Fuzzy take the lazy person's way out on Monday's Blues Cruise and program blues, soul, and R&B artists who had birthdays in the past week. And there are some good ones. James Brown, Little Walter Jacobs, Otis Rush, and Frankie Lee Sims. Lots of them and plenty of others this week on Blues Cruise. Fuzzy is bringing cake.

WDIY presents Middle School Perspective, a new Youth Media Feature with host Kyra Kelly, an eighth grader who attends Lower Macungie Middle School. Middle School Perspective is a podcast showing the views of middle school students on problems they face. The premiere episode will feature a conversation with fellow student Steal Eisenhart about gender norms and stereotypes.

PA primary voting is May 18th, so Marcie Lightwood sat down with Mary Erdman of the League of Women Voters organization here in the Lehigh Valley who recently held the 10th "Running for Local Office" workshop on how to become a political candidate here in the Valley with help from resources to the paperwork process. Marcie then invites Allentown attorney Zachary Cohen to share his experience from a candidate workshop and how it helped shape his run for Lehigh County Judge in the Court of Common Pleas.

Host Prathysha Kothare explores the Impact of artificial intelligence on our society and the role it plays at the intersection of social justice, human rights, and technology.

First, Prathysha talks with Dr. Prasenjit Mitra, Penn State Associate Dean for Research for the College of Information Sciences and Technology about the projects at PSU's Center for Socially Responsible AI. Then, Prathysha invites computer science and engineering professor Dan Lopresti of Lehigh University to talk about the Computing Community Consortium (CCC) and their pursuit of innovative, high-impact computing research that aligns with pressing national and global challenges.

The Special Focus for May is Argyre Planitia. That's Stefan Voß of Hannover, Germany. His style is mostly dark ambient; soundscapes of drones and weird sounds. Good ambient triggers a movie in the listener's mind and Stefan hopes to do just that with his music.

On the next Galactic Travels™, the month-long focus on Argyre Planitia begins. The Featured CD at Midnight will be Soundscapes on Petroglyph Music.
