State Reps Approve Funding for RSDM Special Needs Patients

Dr. R. Glenn Rosivack, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics and Community Health, stands in front of RSDM's special needs clinic.
RSDM will be able to treat more special-needs patients because of new state funding expected to receive final approval from Governor Murphy. The bill, which would give RSDM $250,000, was introduced by state assemblyman Dan Benson (D-14) in the spring and overwhelmingly passed the state senate and assembly. The governor has 45 days to give final approval. John Barnosky, the father of a special-needs patient who is on the autism spectrum, advocated strongly for funds to support RSDM's Delta Dental of New Jersey Special Care Center, which trains dentists to work with patients who have disabilities. "Disability can happen to anyone. It's a bipartisan issue,'' said Barnosky.   LEARN MORE

Student Sees Parallels Between Dentistry and Jewelry Making

James Amir
The Chancellor's Challenge Scholarship Match supports dedicated students like James Amir. The deadline is December 31. Give here.

As the son of a jeweler, fourth-year student James Amir often watched his father at work.
Years later, he was surprised to discover dentists use the same kinds of tools found in his dad's shop, and that the process of creating a dental crown or a gold inlay was similar to the art of jewelry making. Find out why Amir, recipient of the Raymond Rossi DMD Scholarship, chose to become a dentist rather than enter the family business.

Drs. Miriam Furlong and Elisa Velazquez were RSDM students in the 1990s, when the great majority of faculty were men. For them, female faculty were a vital source of support and mentorship. "All of our female instructors were very inspiring to us,'' said Dr. Furlong. After finding success with their own practices, the two hope to offer support to present-day RSDM students. That's why they endowed a scholarship as part of the Chancellor's Challenge Scholarship Match.   LEARN MORE

In Memory

The RSDM community is saddened by the loss of Dr. Milton Israel Houpt, who was chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry for more than 20 years and also served the school in a number of additional capacities. Dr. Houpt passed away last month. He was an avid supporter of children's health and an international leader in his field.  Dr. Houpt was a Professor Emeritus, who authored or co-authored of 117 scientific journal papers and was the recipient of many honors. In an email to RSDM staff and faculty, Dean Cecile A. Feldman wrote, "His advice and guidance was always right on.  He was devoted to his family and was also an avid runner, having completed the New York Marathon for many years."  Donations in memory of Dr. Houpt may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. You can read his obituary here.
