Thoughts from Jennifer Page, Faculty Chair
A dear friend recently said to me, “You see in the world what you look for.” This is at the same time both simple and profound. In the midst of Black History Month, however, it brings to mind some of the lenses through which we view the people around us. For example, a black man in a hoodie conjures up assumptions and stereotypes, often negative ones, in some people who encounter him. Last year at this time, Cephas Williams initiated a social media campaign called
56 Black Men to challenge these stereotypes. Williams photographed 56 black men all wearing black hoodies, and titled each photo, “I Am Not My Stereotype.” In small print below each photo, the occupation or life work of that individual is described. Each man has a positive life story, one which is irrelevant to the black hoodie he chooses to wear. As Williams stated in a 2019 interview with BBC News, “[The campaign] serves as a reminder that for every black man you see represented doing something negative, there are 56 of us that aren’t.” You see in the world what you look for.
Throughout the school, you will find displays of many African Americans who have made a difference in our country and the world. I encourage you to read about these Americans with your children as you circulate through the halls. You can see a display of the

Black History Month Performances
The WWS Music Department invites you to join us

8:05-8:25 for special jazz (and jazz related) performances in celebration of Black History Month. You'll hear performances from our talented students, parents, and faculty.

50th Anniversary Concert

For the whole family - a 50th Anniversary concert presented by
Time for Three
and WWS. Band member Nicholas Kendall is a
WWS alumnus
. Time for Three is renowned for their charismatic performances in venues including Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, and The Royal Albert Hall.
Space is limited.
Tickets are $20 per person, which will cover the costs of the event.
Students through Grade 8 are free (ticket must still be reserved).

50th Anniversary Outdoor Shakespeare

As part of our 50th anniversary celebration, the school will stage a production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed by members of the WWS community. The performance will take place Saturday, June 6, on the grounds of the school. Rehearsals will be 2-3 times per month beginning in February.

**Volunteers needed** for the Faculty Appreciation Luncheon - Friday, February 28
Once a year, WWS families honor our hard-working, dedicated and beloved faculty and staff by offering them a delicious luncheon.
This year's luncheon will be held on Friday, February 28th in the school library.
It’s a lovely event where we get to thank our faculty with our home made dishes.
Thank you in advance for signing up to bring a dish and cooking at home (if possible!).
Your class Parent Organization (PO) representative will be in touch soon. They are tasked with keeping track of the food so that we can be sure to have enough on hand.
Below is a list of suggested courses for each class to make to ensure variety, but please contribute any dish you like!
This is a great and easy event for volunteering. We have a lot of fun setting up, arranging the room and dishes, and getting to witness the faculty and staff enjoying themselves!

Suggested courses:
- Children's Garden: Desserts (i.e. baked goods, truffles, chocolate bars, fruit salad)
- Grades 1-2: Appetizers, each serving 8-10 people (i.e. samosas, pirogues, sushi, crab rolls, shrimp cocktail, hummus, terrine, dumplings, crostini, etc.)
- Grades 3-4: 5 Salads (2 grain or other starch, 1 vegetable, 2 green salads)
- Grade 5: Flower arrangements (1 large and 5 smaller arrangements for the tables)
- Grades 6, 7 & 8: 8 Entrees each serving 8-10 people, served at room temperature or in a crockpot (i.e. stews and soups in a crockpot, sandwiches, wraps, quiche, risotto, carved roast meat, etc.)
- High School: Desserts and cold drinks (i.e. baked goods, truffles, chocolate bars, fruit salad, Italian sodas, sparkling water, etc.)

This fun-filled weekend attracts over 600 families from across the state of Maryland and features:
Artisan wares, live music, a Spring Faerie’s Grotto, a children's shopping room, family crafts, jump rope making, marionette shows, food trucks, and much more!

Singing Workshop at WWS

Christiaan Boele, a leading teacher in the Werbeck singing method is returning to the Washington Waldorf School this winter. He is offering a 90-minute-long workshop and has time that day for a limited number of 45-minute-long private lessons. First come, first served. The location of the 5 morning slots are TBD. The 3 afternoon slots will be at WWS.

Looking for Morning and After School Childcare
We just welcomed a new addition to our family over the holiday break. We are looking for a loving and joyful person to provide some extra help in the weekday mornings and after school. The duties would be helping care for our soon-to-be 3 year old and newborn (e.g., helping with afternoon activities at home and getting ready for school in the morning). We live a few minutes from WWS. If you have any recommendations or know of anyone who would be interested, we would be grateful.
