Worshiping with and Praying for Unaccompanied Migrant Minors

Dear members and friends of Woodhaven,

Can you imagine a convention center filled with cots as far as the eye can see? Try to imagine boys ages 11-17 filing around in line to eat or take a shower and being escorted wherever we go. Some were playing soccer in one corner, balls were being tossed around in another, some milling about aimlessly, others sitting or lying on their cots, and all these boys stuck inside for weeks or months with little to do.

This past Sunday, April 25th, I had the privilege to help lead worship for 2000+ boys in Spanish with a team from Grace Presbytery. I have to tell you that serving these boys was a bittersweet experience. I was excited to use my Spanish language skills and sing praise songs with these youth. When I lived in Latin American countries (Venezuela, Colombia, Chile and Peru), I always loved singing in churches with upbeat praise band music. Singing was not going to be enough for me, so thankfully we had a singer that played guitar (Zach Light-Wells, Director of Music at FPC Dallas). Yet to have even more fun, I also brought along a variety of drums and other percussion instruments to play and share with other members of the team, which included Rev. Brendan McLean (FPC Ft. Worth). Before and after the worship service we had the boys approaching us asking questions. Often, they wanted to know about the instruments and wanted to touch them.
We did not expect a boy of about 15 years to ask to play a drum, and then we were amazed to find out he was extraordinarily talented much more than the two white pastors on the stage. We invited him to play along with us at the end. The three white boy musicians only prepared five songs for the service and when the benediction was finished, they cried out “una mas, una mas”. It kind of made me feel like a “C” list rock star, but;
a) I know it wasn’t about me, and b) I’m sure that they were really both bored and hungry for more praising God so any willing warm body would do. Naturally, we gave them what they wanted, one more song, which then turned into 4 more so we basically went back through our whole set.
The toughest part was hearing their prayer requests. Most had some variation of praying for getting to be reconnected to some family and getting the heck out of that place soon! One 12 year old boy said he had not seen a relative in three months and asked God that he would get to see someone from his family soon. Another boy reflected on how beautiful it was to be in that safe place and have strangers like us helping him. In my opinion, the crowded convention center providing only the bare necessities you would get in prison, can only be described as “beautiful and safe” when you are coming from a country that is dangerous and impoverished.

No matter what political stance you take on immigration, these boys need and want our prayers. Praying though is only the beginning because we have to act if we want life to improve for migrant boys like the ones we encountered at the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center. Let us consider how Jesus would want us to treat our neighbors from the south.

Con mucho amor,
Shane

Thank You!
To the Wonderful folks at Woodhaven Presbyterian Church,
Thank you so much for the Easter gift. It is a treasure to have someone from the church bring you such a gift. Blessings to all of you who were involved. When you are alone and some kind person comes, it is a cheerful greeting.

Hello friends!
Happy Easter! Jesus is alive! Allelula!

Did you know that it's STILL Easter? The joy of Easter can't be contained in just one Sunday, so it is spread out through many Sundays.

The Bible Stories continue to follow the series of Godly Play stories called "Knowing Jesus in a New Way". These special stories are told between the Mystery of Easter and the Mystery of Pentecost. Every week when the previous stories are summarized, we are reminded of the different ways that the followers of Jesus came to know him in a new way. This part is called "Known in the Morning", and tells the story of Jesus appearing on the beach and make breakfast for the disciples. I love the stories found in the Godly Play curriculum, and it brings me joy to share some of them with you!

I wonder . . . how can you tell more of this story?

Remember that a Sunday School lesson is also included as an attachment in this email.

Lots of church communities are having conversations about what
"re-emerging/re-entry" looks like. I'm curious, what are your feelings on the matter? What is your faith community planning to do? Will you still plant to worship and do faith formation activities at home?

Always remember that you are each a Beloved Child of God! Hallie

Mission
Oldest Presbyterian Church in Phillippines

Our missionaries, Dessa and Cobbie Palm work out of Stillman University in Dumaguete in the central Phillippines. Stillman University and its associated church were founded by Presbyterians in 1901. The church and its several ministers serve the university's students, faculty, and alumni. Cobbie has taught at the university's Divinity School.
(The church has been rebuilt since its early years.)
Stillman University Church Motto:
"Proclaiming Christ and Discipling for Dynamic Witness."

"We shall be a congregation whose vibrant worship becomes a living testimony of our faith in God whose love and grace was revealed fully in the ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ." The church emphasizes its evangelistic witness, developing mature growth in Christ, and making faith effective through service to the community.

Nurture and Care

The Little Things

It really is the little things
That mean the most of all...
The "let me help you with that" things
That may seem very small,
The "I'll be glad to do it" things
That make your cares much lighter,
The "laugh with me, it's funny" things
That make your outlook brighter...

The "never mind the trouble" things,
The "yes, I understand,"
The interest and encouragement
In everything you've planned...
It really is the little things,
The friendly word or smile,
That add such happiness to life
And make it more worth while.
