Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo
May 24, 2021

Washburne Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the warm weather and sunshine this weekend. The hot weather looks like it will continue this week and we would appreciate you reminding your students to bring a water bottle to school. With the longer day and KW and other activities outdoors we have seen an increase in students visiting the nurse for water.  Thank you for your help with this.

We have a lot going on as we move into our final two weeks at Washburne. Students have an 11:50am dismissal this Friday and we will have our annual awards ceremony right before dismissal. Our 8th graders last day of school is Wednesday, June 2nd. 8th graders will have an early dismissal at 1:15pm on this day after a lunch and ice cream treat sponsored by our PTO. 7th grade students will have a normal dismissal time at 3:30pm.

For more information regarding graduation events, please read this reminder from the graduation committee.

The PTO is also reaching out to 7th grade families for volunteers to help with graduation. For more details and to access the link to sign up Click Here.

Lurie's Children's Hospital Fundraiser
This week is the last chance to support our advisory teams' fundraising efforts!

Together our school is hoping to raise $10,000. We've done such an amazing job with the Dance Marathon in its first two years, so we think that we can meet this goal despite the short timeline and lack of a live event. (Last year we raised over $42,000, making us the top fundraising middle school in the country!)

Here are a couple of incentives to help us in the spirit of the competitive fun:
  •  The top fundraising team will get to have pizza and ice cream party the final week of school
  • Students qualify for a t-shirt through Lurie Children's when they raise $50, and adults qualify when they raise $100.
Our fundraising deadline is Friday, May 28th.

Illinois Science Assessment Make-Up Testing
8th grade students who missed the Illinois Science Assessment on Wednesday, May 12th will have make-up testing on Tuesday, May 25th.

DISTRICT NEWS

Health Mitigation Update
Although the May 17 Executive Order from Governor Pritzker rescinded the mask mandate in Illinois for certain environments and organizations, school districts must continue to follow Illinois Department of Public Health and Illinois State Board of Education school guidance, including masking and social distancing, for at least the remainder of the 2020-2021 academic year.

Per IDPH and ISBE, school guidance is not changing, and both unvaccinated and fully vaccinated individuals will still need to wear masks at school.

Bridge Forward Plan to the 2021-2022 School Year: Updates from the Departments of Innovation, Teaching and Learning (ITL) and Student Services (SS)
Weekly updates on the Bridge Forward plan to the 2021-2022 school year are now shared by the Departments of Innovation, Teaching and Learning and Student Services.  These updates highlight key areas that matter to our community as we move forward from the past year of the pandemic.
This week's update is dedicated to  Curriculum Pacing and Priorities.

Student iPad Collection
At the end of each year, our district collects student iPads. Your student's iPad will be collected in their classroom between May 27th - June 4th.  The District's Technology team will be collecting the device and accessories (iPad Charging Adapter, Cord, K-4 iPad Case, 5th-8th iPad Case with all 4 Pieces). All files created on the device during your student's use this past school year, digital creations, pictures, books, stories, can only be saved and backed up off campus before the iPad is returned.

To ensure all of your student's digital creations, pictures, books, stories and files are saved to Google Drive and/or iCloud, the student (with the help of an adult in your household) should complete the iPad checklist specific to their current grade level, listed below. Simply follow the steps provided in the checklist below to backup any information you would like to save from this school year.

Remote Learning students are required to return their iPad to their home school by 3:00 p.m. on Friday, June 4th. If you are unable to return the iPad before that time, you may return the device to the District Office or call 847-501-5467 to schedule a drop off appointment during the week of July 7th.

Please note: Only students attending the following summer programs will not need to complete these steps at this time and may hold onto their iPad for use during the summer programs:
  • Extended School Year (ESY)
  • Adventures In Learning (AIL)
  • Summer Support Programs for Reading and Math
  • Summer Slide

CHECKLISTS
The following checklists have steps included to help you backup all the important information from this year and prepare the iPad for a successful return process.
Post-Vaccination Clarification for Families
If your child received a COVID-19 Vaccination in the prior 3 days (including the day of the vaccination, which is considered Day 1), and is experiencing symptoms that may be vaccine related, possible COVID-19, or other unrelated illness (e.g., chills, headache, myalgia, arthralgia, fatigue) they can continue to come to school if feeling well enough and do not have a fever.

If they have a fever within the prior 3 days (including day of vaccination, which is considered Day 1), they will need to stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications.

If symptoms do not improve and persist for more than 2 days, you will need to check off the symptoms on Crisis Go and your school nurse will follow up with you regarding next steps. This will require clinical evaluation.

If your child received a COVID-19 Vaccination in the prior 3 days (including day of vaccination, which is considered Day 1) and is experiencing symptoms unlikely to be from COVID-19 vaccination (e.g., cough, shortness of breath, rhinorrhea, loss of taste/smell), please keep your child and siblings home and fill out Crisis Go accordingly and your school nurse will contact you with the next steps.

If you have any further questions, please refer to the  chart from IDPH.

Even after your child has received one OR both doses of the vaccine, you still need to report if they are experiencing any symptoms or if they are identified as a close contact.

Your child is not considered fully vaccinated until they have received both doses of their vaccine and it has been more than 14 days since their last dose.
