JR's Weekly Column
These are indeed challenging times we live in. So many issues to deal with, and then you add the pandemic, record-breaking heat, and now the Santa Ana’s. The fire danger couldn’t be any more severe, and we all must be extra vigilant. As I write this newsletter column, I’m praying the predicted winds don’t come to fruition, and accelerate the fires further.

November 1st, write it down as that’s when we once again fall back and adjust our clocks, losing an hour of daylight at the end of our day. Here’s an idea. With the challenges presented by the pandemic and its associated impact on local business, wouldn’t now be the optimum time to forego the time change? Couldn’t our outdoor seating option for restaurants be better served without this change? And, it could give our retailers a little extra opportunity to regain some of the business lost due to the stay at home orders. What do you think?

Along with the November 1st DST switch, we also have the election two days later, on November 3rd . There are 12 Propositions on this year’s ballot. Wouldn’t we all be better served if the full intent of these was clear? I’m not talking unintended consequences but the real purpose written in a clear, no hyperbole style which everyone could understand?

Things are heating up on the election front as we get closer to Election Day, and the Chamber’s Candidate Forums are taking shape. Please see below for the confirmed 50th District and City Council forums, with more details coming soon on others. These Candidate Forums are a joint effort of the Chamber and the Times-Advocate.

A heartfelt thank you goes out from the Chamber to all of our firefighters who are tirelessly working in extreme conditions to halt the fires ravaging our State.

54 days and counting until Election Day. And, check out this interactive map for an easy to search by address listing of which district each address falls under in the city.

Your support of the Chamber is essential as we work our way through this pandemic. Please consider becoming a member. Together we carry a larger and more impactful voice than we do individually.

And thank you to all who have renewed their membership of the Chamber. Your continued support fuels our mission of building a more robust and vibrant business climate in Escondido and beyond.

Sincerely,

James Rowten (JR)
