As stewards of the public's trust, Michigan's 15 public universities are bringing their full slate of resources to bear in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic, marshaling medical and health care assets, research, facilities, protective gear and equipment, and a vast range of expertise spanning the disciplines. Outreach and collaboration are central themes in the universities' efforts to address this public health crisis.
 
Each week, we will share a sample of new programs and actions the state universities are taking in their efforts to respond to the coronavirus pandemic and that demonstrate the vital missions of Michigan's public universities.
Central Michigan University
Upon hearing local hospitals were short on COVID-19 tests, CMU College of Medicine Professor Jesse Bakke and his students volunteered to make vials of liquid, called virus transport mediums, a critical component to the COVID-19 testing chain.

Eastern Michigan University
St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Hospital is making daily use of the three 60-gallon washing machines and four dryers in Eastern Michigan University's Student Athlete Performance Center (SAPC). Hospital staff handles the laundry process, including the several steps of precautions required. The EMU staff involved arrives early to open the facility and loading dock area for hospital trucks.

Ferris State University
Ferris' COVID-19 Community Response Team delivered 200 ear protectors to Cherry Health, a health center that focuses on high-quality health services to people with little or no access to healthcare. The equipment will be used by Cherry Health staff to stop irritation behind the ears of team members who are now wearing protective masks for a full shift.

Grand Valley State University
Grand Valley State University alum Nate Gillespie's group, Coronavirus Civilian Corps, coordinates through social media to place orders at one restaurant, brewery, or cafe all at one time to give the business a noticeable boost.

Lake Superior State University
The Lake Superior State University nursing department is collaborating with the Superior Simulation Center, War Memorial Hospital, and the United States Army Corps of Engineers-Detroit (USACE) to create Acute Container Care Pods. Ready for trial, these mobile Pods will be shipped and can be utilized by hospitals throughout the United States for those in need of additional ICU hospital beds with ventilator support needs.

A researcher in the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine  has developed a new rapid COVID-19 test but is still seeking federal approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Michigan Technological University turned its labs into a rapid testing center for patients potentially exposed to COVID-19 with approval from the
U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Northern Michigan University
The Wildcats Mean Business campaign is an effort to encourage the NMU and Marquette community to support businesses during COVID-19, sponsoring NMU events as well as local businesses owned by alumni. It's providing a range of free services to local small businesses during the crisis.

Oakland University
Oakland University faculty and staff members, as well as students, are contributing and producing medical equipment, preparing buildings for use as health-care facilities, providing Wi-Fi to local residents, and offering other support services.

Saginaw Valley State University
Scientists at Saginaw Valley State University are turning 270 gallons of ethyl alcohol donated by Old Town Distillery into about 300 gallons of hand sanitizer to combat coronavirus. The project is one of several COVID-19 response initiatives SVSU is pursuing in collaboration with Michigan Health Improvement Alliance.

Wayne State University
A Wayne State University Physician Group has launched a virtual clinic to care for people diagnosed with COVID-19 who are in isolation at home, or require follow-up care after hospitalization. The clinic also serves those who have COVID-19 symptoms and are waiting for test results with concerns about their health status and protective measures.

Western Michigan University alum Michael Schwandt's General Motors team created a ventilator supply chain in 72 hours after being contacted by StopTheSpread.org , a coalition of volunteer CEOs working to unlock the collective potential of U.S. businesses to catalyze action in response to COVID-19.
