These are not normal times. Hence, this is an unusual letter. I don’t feel comfortable discussing the business side of operating the bookstores. It is more fun to talk about how books change lives, or the new great staff picks, or the amazing communities we operate in. In short, I want to be discussing all the ways we are connected - to each other, to storytelling, to our communities. But, given the continuing impacts of Covid, I need to ask for your help.
Retail is a weird business. Most retailers lose money for 11 months of the year and only start to turn a profit near the holidays (the term Black Friday is derived from stores going from the Red (negative) to the Black (positive)). Given the difficulties of the year so far, these next three months are more important than any in our history. We need to finish the year strong. Please support us as much as you can.
If you plan on shopping at the Northshire over the holidays, please help us maintain social distancing by:
- Shopping early - visit in October and November this year if possible.
- Shopping at off hours - the stores are less crowded on weekdays and in the mornings.
Books have proven their value during Covid in many special ways - whether as a diversion, a source of information, or as a fulcrum of inspiration. Books are here to unite, to explain, to open opportunities. They are the perfect gift.
Your support is essential to our success - thank you so much for helping us get through these tough times.
Best,
Chris

Author, scholar, and acclaimed historian Gretchen Sorin will discuss her fascinating new book - now the basis of a major PBS documentary by Ric Burns - Driving While Black: African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights with fellow historian William S. Walker. Sorin reveals how the car—the ultimate symbol of independence and possibility—has always held particular importance for African Americans, allowing black families to evade the many dangers presented by an entrenched racist society and to enjoy, in some measure, the freedom of the open road.

Marilynne Robinson, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Humanities Medal, returns to the world of Gilead with Jack, the latest novel in one of the great works of contemporary American fiction
"If Jack Boughton imagined himself as a pebble, it would be one that caused no ripple when tossed into a pond; if he was a breeze, not a single leaf would stir. His waking moments are spent wondering how his life has gotten so far off track. Harmlessness is his objective and acquiescence is the only way he responds to life's cruelties. Then Jack, a white man, falls in love with Della, a young black woman, in a society still rampant with racial animosity. This is the author's fourth book set in and around the fictional town of Gilead, Iowa. With her masterful prose, she lifts what might have been a fairly conventional narrative into a timeless story about the redemptive power of love."~ Reviewed by Alden Graves
Robinson’s Gilead novels, which have won one Pulitzer Prize and two National Book Critics Circle Awards, are a vital contribution to contemporary American literature and a revelation of our national character and humanity.

A riveting, deeply personal account of history in the making—from the president who inspired us to believe in the power of democracy
In the stirring, highly anticipated first volume of his presidential memoirs, Barack Obama tells the story of his improbable odyssey from young man searching for his identity to leader of the free world, describing in strikingly personal detail both his political education and the landmark moments of the first term of his historic presidency—a time of dramatic transformation and turmoil.
This beautifully written and powerful book captures Barack Obama’s conviction that democracy is not a gift from on high but something founded on empathy and common understanding and built together, day by day.

This word play book, comprised of many different and unusual types of word games including tongue (brain) twisters and spoonerisms, has several key goals. First, this book is intended to provide fun for all who use it, children and adults alike. Operating off the principle, Laugh2Learn, this book enables users to see the many ways in which words can be animated while at home, in school, on car trips, or in doctor's offices. Second, this book can be used by parents and teachers to help children navigate difficult times including school closures and other debilitating events. When other learning is stalled or children can't concentrate well if at all, they can try a tongue twister; it will provide laughter and levity and learning all at once. This right priced book will also animate the trauma responsive strategies of the best selling new adult release, Trauma Doesn't Stop at the School Door. Try it; you and your children/students will like it.
