Weekly Update
January 29, 2020
From the Principal's Office

Dear parents and guardians,
As many of you know, Bishop Blanchet has joined dozens of other King County high schools in partnering with Forefront Suicide Prevention, a center of experts affiliated with the University of Washington. We are very fortunate to have Forefront's support and to be on the leading edge of preventative care. Our work with Forefront includes expanding our curriculum on student mental health, trainings on suicide prevention for parents and faculty, and refining our crisis response plan.

Please consider attending a parent-to-parent training in the Norcliffe Student Commons on February 6, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. or on February 11 from 8:15-9:30 a.m. The training aims to empower those who attend with tools to recognize and address the warning signs of a potential crisis, looking out for our own children as well as their friends, classmates and neighbors.

Our 9th grade students will be receiving the LEARN™ Suicide Prevention Training on February 5/6 or February 11/12 in their health course.  We are aware that this training may be upsetting for some students and we will be provide a safe-space for opting out. Our hope is that all students will receive this training. However, if you and/or your student feel that they need to opt out, please contact the student's counselor and/or PE/health teacher. There is more information available here.

Lastly, I cordially invite you to join Tony DeSapio and me at the parent/guardian coffee this Friday, January 31 from 8:15-9:30 a.m. in the Brave Cafe in honor of all you do to make our school great. You are welcome to join us for our all school mass celebrating Catholic Schools Week following the coffee at 9:35 a.m. in the main gym.

Sincerely,

Sam Procopio
Principal

THE ADDAMS FAMILY
The WHOLE Addams Family, cast and crew, kicked off their new endeavor on Thursday, January 9 with a great dinner featuring foods that any good Addams would love:  lasagna, hot dogs, salads culminating in a bona fide pie eating contest! There was fabulous representation from freshman, sophomores, juniors, seniors and even Director, Mr. Bergin. That being said, there was no contest because freshman, Joey Fesalbon, took the cake!

This gathering is a Bishop Blanchet Theater tradition because the work of the show is the work of us all. Cast and crew are busy learning songs and lines, building sets, gathering props, learning make-up techniques, sewing and marketing. Now is a good time for you to carve out some time on your calendar. The show runs at the Moore Theatre, May 1-3. Ticket information will be released soon and we are already urging our BBHS family to get your tickets settled early.  This promises to be a show that the whole family will enjoy and we want to see you all there!

LUNAR NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
Mámì Tran food truck will be on campus to help celebrate the Lunar New Year on Friday, January 31, during both lunches with some delicious Vietnamese cuisine. Bring your wallets and your appetite! (cash/credit card/Apple pay accepted)

A number of our international and local students celebrate the Lunar New Year, which fell on January 25 this year. Lunar New Year is also called many other names, including Spring Festival, or in Chinese  Chunjie , Vietnamese Tet , Korean Solnal , Tibetan Losar,  and is typically celebrated in China and other Asian countries with the first new moon of the lunar calendar - and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, so the dates of the holiday vary slightly from year to year, beginning some time between January 21 and February 20, according to Western calendars.  Happy Lunar New Year!

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED
The Bishop Blanchet International Program is in need of host families for the 2020-21 school year. If you are interested in a cultural experience, are excited to welcome a high school student into your home, can provide a private bedroom and quiet study space for your host student to study, this could be for you! A generous monthly stipend is provided. (The 2019-2020 stipend is $1075 per month.) Current international students are from China, Chile, Italy and Vietnam.

Host families do not need to have a student at BBHS - so please pass this information on to anyone you believe would make a good host. Please click here for more information or contact Janah Valenzuela at jvalenzuela@bishopblanchet.org or 206-527-7718.
