The Whale Surfaces
with Author Ruth Rotkowitz
Wednesday, July 14
1:00 pm ET on Zoom
Free program
In her debut novel, Escaping the Whale, author Ruth Rotkowitz created the character Marcia Gold, a 28-year-old daughter of Holocaust survivors struggling with inherited trauma and desperately trying to lead a ‘normal’ life.
In this prequel, we see Marcia as a child and then an adolescent absorbing her family’s painful Holocaust experiences. Although she tries very hard to be a typical child and teenager, she is besieged by the shadow of the Holocaust and all it represents about cruelty and inhumanity. The demons that torment her in Escaping the Whale begin to take root in her mind, and Marcia begins to plan her escape from them.
Read as a prequel or as a stand-alone, the short novella The Whale Surfaces presents a picture of life for a child of well-meaning immigrants. To purchase this book, click here.
