Lesley Brooks, MD
President's letter: Applauding the AMA's new diversity policy
In this quarter's president's letter, NCMS President Lesley Brooks, MD, applauds the American Medical Association House of Delegates for passing a new policy to encourage diversity in the physician workforce and she poses a question of what we can do in northern Colorado. "We all know that you don't have to be a physician of color or from a diverse background to positively impact this issue and decrease disparities in medicine. A physician workforce that is informed, aware, and well versed in the various ways in which bias can impact health outcomes is a powerful step toward decreasing disparities in health outcomes." Read more here.
Maria Medina, EdD
Executive update: Advancing the priorities of northern Colorado physicians
NCMS Executive Director Maria Medina, EdD, gives a report on top initiatives and special projects the board identified as priorities earlier in the year. She reminds all members to consider volunteering to join the NCMS Board of Directors and to attend the NCMS Physician Meet and Greet on Aug. 17. Read more here.
NCMS celebrates advance care directive registry bill signing
NCMS applauds the signing of SB19-073 into law. It creates a statewide system of advance medical directives that allows qualified professionals to upload an individual's advance health care directive upon his or her request. The directive can contain medical orders for scope of treatment, a declaration as to medical treatment, a directive relating to cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or a medical durable power of attorney. NCMS leaders -- including Cory Carroll, MD; Jan Gillespie, MD; Donna Sullivan, MD; and Executive Director Maria Medina, EdD -- worked on this concept for several years with bill sponsor Sen. Joann Ginal (D-Fort Collins) and the bill's passage represents a strategic target achieved for NCMS. Read more here.
