Fiction
The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead (Signed copies available!)

In this bravura follow-up to the Pulitzer Prize, and National Book Award-winning #1  New York Times  bestseller  The Underground Railroad , Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida.

As the Civil Rights movement begins to reach the black enclave of Frenchtown in segregated Tallahassee, Elwood Curtis takes the words of Dr. Martin Luther King to heart: He is "as good as anyone." Abandoned by his parents, but kept on the straight and narrow by his grandmother, Elwood is about to enroll in the local black college. But for a black boy in the Jim Crow South of the early 1960s, one innocent mistake is enough to destroy the future. Elwood is sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, whose mission statement says it provides "physical, intellectual and moral training" so the delinquent boys in their charge can become "honorable and honest men."

In reality, the Nickel Academy is a grotesque chamber of horrors where the sadistic staff beats and sexually abuses the students, corrupt officials and locals steal food and supplies, and any boy who resists is likely to disappear "out back." Stunned to find himself in such a vicious environment, Elwood tries to hold onto Dr. King's ringing assertion "Throw us in jail and we will still love you." His friend Turner thinks Elwood is worse than naive, that the world is crooked, and that the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble.

The tension between Elwood's ideals and Turner's skepticism leads to a decision whose repercussions will echo down the decades. Formed in the crucible of the evils Jim Crow wrought, the boys' fates will be determined by what they endured at the Nickel Academy.

Based on the real story of a reform school in Florida that operated for one hundred and eleven years and warped the lives of thousands of children,  The Nickel Boys  is a devastating, driven narrative that showcases a great American novelist writing at the height of his powers.

Never Have I Ever by Joshilyn Jackson (Signed copies available!)

In this game, even winning can be deadly...

Amy Whey is proud of her ordinary life and the simple pleasures that come with it—teaching diving lessons, baking cookies for new neighbors, helping her best friend, Charlotte, run their local book club. Her greatest joy is her family: her devoted professor husband, her spirited fifteen-year-old stepdaughter, her adorable infant son. And, of course, the steadfast and supportive Charlotte. But Amy’s sweet, uncomplicated life begins to unravel when the mysterious and alluring Angelica Roux arrives on her doorstep one book club night.

Sultry and magnetic, Roux beguiles the group with her feral charm. She keeps the wine flowing and lures them into a game of spilling secrets. Everyone thinks it’s naughty, harmless fun. Only Amy knows better. Something wicked has come her way—a she-devil in a pricey red sports car who seems to know the terrible truth about who she is and what she once did.

When they’re alone, Roux tells her that if she doesn’t give her what she asks for, what she deserves, she’s going to make Amy pay for her sins. One way or another.

To protect herself and her family and save the life she’s built, Amy must beat the devil at her own clever game, matching wits with Roux in an escalating war of hidden pasts and unearthed secrets. Amy knows the consequences if she can’t beat Roux. What terrifies her is everything she could lose if she wins.

A diabolically entertaining tale of betrayal, deception, temptation, and love filled with dark twists leavened by Joshilyn Jackson’s trademark humor,  Never Have I Ever  explores what happens when the transgressions of our past come back with a vengeance.

An American Sunrise by Joy Harjo, Poet Laureate

A stunning new volume from the first Native American Poet Laureate of the United States, informed by her tribal history and connection to the land.

In the early 1800s, the Mvskoke people were forcibly removed from their original lands east of the Mississippi to Indian Territory, which is now part of Oklahoma. Two hundred years later, Joy Harjo returns to her family’s lands and opens a dialogue with history. In An American Sunrise, Harjo finds blessings in the abundance of her homeland and confronts the site where her people, and other indigenous families, essentially disappeared. From her memory of her mother’s death, to her beginnings in the native rights movement, to the fresh road with her beloved, Harjo’s personal life intertwines with tribal histories to create a space for renewed beginnings. Her poems sing of beauty and survival, illuminating a spirituality that connects her to her ancestors and thrums with the quiet anger of living in the ruins of injustice. A descendent of storytellers and “one of our finest—and most complicated—poets” (Los Angeles Review of Books), Joy Harjo continues her legacy with this latest powerful collection.

Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe by Jo Watson Hackl

Like my childhood favorite From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler , Smack Dab in the Middle of Maybe is an art mystery, but with a Southern twist. Instead of running away to NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art, our heroine Cricket Overland hides out in a tree house on the edge of a lumber ghost town that holds the clues to discovering The Bird Room her mother has been looking for for years. This touching coming-of-age novel mixes Southern dialect, woodscraft, puzzle-solving, and art into a wonderful adventure that also delicately addresses the topic of mental illness. Highly recommended! Local author!

The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator by Timothy C. Winegard

War historians discuss generals and strategies, occasionally the common soldier, but seldom bugs. Alexander the Great, the Visigoths who sacked Rome and the Crusaders lost to mosquitoes. Each mosquito-infested region has its own disease characteristics. Whereas the locals are 'seasoned' to the local diseases and occupy the healthier regions, foreign invaders often blunder into deadly swamps and suffer 50 to 80% deaths or disabilities. Either they conquer quickly and move on, or hang around and die from malaria or yellow fever. The major exception was the post-Columbian invasion of America by Europeans and their African slaves who had the home-town advantage of bringing their own mosquito-vectored diseases to a defenseless indigenous population. An intriguing perspective on human versus human versus mosquito history. My great grandfather died of Yellow Fever a few months before my grandfather was born.

Rush by Lisa Patton

Rush is chock -full of many surprises. Patton presents all the fun parts of a sorority: the life-long friendships, exciting rush week, sympathetic and loving staff; and combines it with real life: haughty alums, overt racism, and the underside of partying. She examines how an all-black sorority house staff could learn to love their jobs even though they have no benefits. Sorority sisters learn who their real friends and enemies are, and that no one, after all, is really perfect. Not even the cute sorority sisters or their highfalutin' moms.

The Lager Queen of Minnesota by J. Ryan Stradal

I'm certainly not a beer expert but I found much to like in The Lager Queen of Minnesota. Stadal presents several strong female characters whose fortitude and perseverance shine as the real heroes of this book. The irony of the title is not lost and will have you wondering who the REAL Lager Queen of Minnesota will be at the end. Truly an enjoyable read!

Two Girls Down by Louisa Luna

Alice Vega is a seriously bad-ass bounty hunter from CA who specializes in finding missing children. When 8 year old Bailey and 10 year old Kylie disappear from their mother’s car while she runs into a store, Alice is hired by the girls’ aunt to come to the small PA town to help the overworked and understaffed police. Alice immediately convinces Max Caplan (Cap) to help her. Cap is a disgraced ex-police officer who is now a PI. Not only does Vega have extraordinary martial arts skills but she also has the resources of a super hacker to get her any information she needs. Together they form a powerful team that can do things and go places the police can’t. An easy readable writing style, a great story line with a very unexpected ending, and really likeable characters who give the book an added layer of excitement and who I hope we see again make this a book you won’t want to miss.

The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware

One of the most brilliantly written thrillers I’ve read in a while! Told in a letter written in prison while awaiting trial for murder, Rowan lays out the circumstances of her taking a job as a nanny to a family in Scotland, the death of one of her charges, and her innocence, hoping she can convince a famous solicitor to take her case. The setting in an old manor in the middle of nowhere Scotland adds to the creepy, ghostly, almost gothic like atmosphere. The addition of smart lights, cameras, sounds and the Happy app to control the entire house just add to the feeling that someone is watching Rowan at all times. It is richly written, has a wonderful, complex plot, and an ending that will leave you agape… I’m still trying to process it all. Oh, Ms. Ware… you’ve done it again!!

The Escape Room by Megan Goldin

Escape rooms have become very popular for team building and character development in corporations so it was no surprise that Stanhope and Sons decided to use one to perhaps decide which of the team members might be laid off. The team of Sylvie, Jules, Sam and their boss Victor used to be the darlings of the investment banking world but in the past year investment banking as a whole was suffering and their team in particular had some very unusual and spectacular failures. Rumors were floating that some, if not all of them, might be part of a worldwide layoff so when they were ordered at the last minute to show up for an offsite meeting late on Friday afternoon they all complied, albeit very reluctantly. The four entered an elevator to go up to their mysterious meeting and that is when the fun or rather terror began. Welcome to the cutthroat world of investment banking. How does it feel to have it all, and then lose it at the hands of your dishonest co-workers? This high energy thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat throughout. It’s masterfully written, with an uncanny intelligence, and its surprise ending will leave you gleefully satisfied. The best revenge is served cold and to live well.

City of Windows by Robert Pobi

Who is Dr. Lucas Page? He is a new reluctant hero for fans of Michael Bennett, Lincoln Rhymes, and Amos Decker. Reluctant because he quit the FBI over 10 years ago after an ‘event' which literally cost him an arm and a leg and also an eye. Hero because after being pressured to rejoin the FBI in a search for a serial sniper who is killing law enforcement he uses his special spatial recognition and mathematical skills to uncover clues and eventually find the killer. It is unusual to have outstanding writing, meaningful character development, sarcasm and humor, nonstop action, and current political commentary all rolled into one book, but this not to be missed book has it all.

Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh

A successful con man turned defense attorney should be enough of a hook to get you to read this extremely compelling legal thriller, but just to add a little more interest Cavanagh adds an unbelievable twist…a serial killer as smart and tricky as Eddie Flynn is on the jury. Not only does this thriller give us a look at a very skilled and clever defense attorney but also at the very smart, but very sick mind of a serial killer. If you like legal thrillers that are truly sit on the edge of your seat thrillers this is one you won’t want to miss.

Force of Nature by Jane Harper

A company weekend in the thick Australian bush, meant for team-building, goes awry when the women’s team gets lost. Lots of hidden feelings team members have towards each other complicate their mission to get back to the camp. Finally, 4 of the 5 return but they all have a different story about what happened to Alice. Aaron Falk returns after his debut in The Dry to solve this mystery and resolve some personal issues he has been dealing with. Once again the Australian landscape was very much a main character of the book. This time instead of The Dry we have wet, cold wind creating the most miserable conditions imaginable for those who are lost, hungry, and quickly becoming distrusting of each other. The complicated plot, edge of your seat suspense and the vivid description of the conditions in the rugged Giralang Ranges will keep you breathless and glad you are safely curled up in doors reading.

True Believer by Jack Carr

This is one of the best military intrigue books I have read. I recently finished The Terminal List and was thrilled I did not have to wait long for more of James Reece. I find him equally compelling to Mitch Rapp, Scot Harvath and their ilk. You will enjoy and understand the book more if you read The Terminal List first as you will understand why James Reece is the man he is today. A patriot who has been robbed of everything he values. His response to an epic betrayal is not an abandonment of his country, but deep dedication to his friends and willingness to dance with the devil for their wellbeing. The detail in the book will enthrall any fan of military and political thrillers and open your eyes to things you would rather not know. The historic significance of bad decisions by politicians is horrific to behold. I found the decision to leave the Department of Defense redactions intact brilliant.

Atria Books 2019  - Format: Hardcover - Price: $27.00

The Witch Elm by Tana French

Do you ever really escape the events of your past? This book will give you chills as dire events of the present are related to cavalier acts of youth. The main character is incredibly flawed inside but maintains a facade that others may envy. Perhaps everyone struggles with tragedy, but maybe none more than the previously charmed individual. The book has a great cast of supporting characters that are extremely well developed. Any mystery or literary fan will enjoy this book.

The Book Charmer by Karen Hawkins

I adored this book. It is so charming and the characters are people you wish you met. From the magical Dove family to still recovering foster children the aspects of the story are so vivid you feel you are watching events unfold. Sarah Dove is trying to save her town, she believes that is her destiny. So what if she is a little quirky, who is not? Grace has more sudden responsibility than a driven and controlling loner could imagine. Only adding to the challenge is that the responsibility is for a parentless eight year old and her aging foster Mother who has Alzheimers. How can they possibly unite for the greater good? Read this book, enjoy every minute and hope for a sequel.

Gallery Books 2019  - Format: Paperback - Price: $16.00

Shamed by Linda Castillo

Another revealing look into the life of the Amish set in a depressed area of the midwest. All the books in this series are a great continuation in the life of Kate, police chief and former Amish, and John, her lover and BCI agent. While the series is worth following most all the books can stand alone, as does this book. There is less interaction and development of the relationship of John and Kate in this book, but still plenty of compelling story lines and moral questions. The Amish have a very religious and fairly legalistic society, so the events in this book are very out of character and revealing of the basic human nature. Starting with a horrendously violent and seemingly random murder the pace never slows down. Any fan of a great plot will enjoy this book.

Minotaur Books 2019  - Format: Hardcover - Price: $26.99

Smokescreen by Iris Johansen

It is amazing to me that Iris Johansen can keep the Eve Duncan series current, relevant and engaging this long, but she does in a compelling fashion. This is one of my favorites in quite some time, the supporting characters are so deep, and single minded in a quest for justice, that you immediately become invested. Journalists who are bold see the worst the world has to offer, corruption at the highest level, brutality for no reason, and the accumulation of wealth at the expense of the poor. This story embodies all of the above with enough twists to keep you entertained to the end. Can easily be read as a stand alone book.
