THE CLASS MEETING: The Heart of the Methodist Revival
Never omit meeting your Class or Band. These are the very sinews of our Society; and whatever weakens, or tends to weaken, our regard for these, or our exactness in attending them, strikes at the very root of community. John Wesley
In the eighteenth century, a small number of Anglican priests began preaching on the importance of justification (forgiveness, or pardon with God) by faith and the new birth (entering into a new relationship with God the Father as an adopted child). The best know of these priests were George Whitfield and John and Charles Wesley. Many of their contemporaries were more scandalized by the fact that they were preaching outdoors than by the content of their preaching. These preachers soon became known as Methodists because of their methodical approach to Christian life. Thousands of women and men were converted to the Christian faith by these Methodists. Particularly, through the ministry of George Whitfield, the message of justification by faith crossed the Atlantic Ocean gaining momentum in the British colonies in America. The First Great Awakening in America was due largely to the traveling and preaching of George Whitfield, not John Wesley. Whitfield was the more dramatic orator with audiences that were sometimes in the tens of thousands of people.
Benjamin Franklin was in awe of Whitfield's voice which could be hear d(without amplification) for great distances. He believed that just the way Whitfield could pronounce "Mesopotamia "could convert people! Yet most historians would agree that the fruits of those converted under Whitfield's ministry did not last nearly as long as those of John Wesley. What was the difference? John Wesley was a gifted organizer. Methodist preacher Adam Clarke summed up the difference was the class meetings as the key to the Methodist Revival.
From long experience I know the propriety of Mr. Wesley's advice ; Establish class- meetings and form societies wherever you preach and have attentive hearers; for, wherever we have preached without doing so, the word has been like seed by the way-side." It was by this means we have been enabled to establish permanent and holy Churches all over the world. Mr. Wesley saw the necessity of this from the beginning. Mr. Whitfield, when separated from Mr. Wesley, did not follow it. What was the consequence? The fruit of Mr. Whitfield's labor died with himself. Mr. Wesley's remains and multiplies.
The Class Meeting was started in 1742 and was a weekly small group meeting 10-12 people with a class leader. The purpose was "to watch over one another in love." Each week they ask each person "How is it with your soul." It was different from our current Sunday School Class or Bible Study in that the focus was on life transformation. Scripture was read and there was a time of prayer for sure, but there was time for sharing or "doing life together. The Band meeting was a smaller group who met for the same reasons but was intended for more spiritually mature believers.
On Sunday August 25 we will share the different opportunities for you to participate in a small group at Higgins. Barbara Blankenship and our Prayer and Evangelism Group have been working with those who have volunteered to be leaders and to open their homes for small groups. I pray you will consider participating in this "means of grace" of meeting with other Christians that will help you to grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ."! We might just have another Methodist Revival!

Expanding Ministry to Kids! We're Growing!
We have added some new Kid's and Youth Ministry to our busy schedule here at Higgins. On Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30, we are doing Celebration Place for kids and The Landing for youth. It is a ministry for the kids of people attending Celebrate Recovery. We are using the curriculum that correlates with what the parents are learning, so that the kids and youth are learning how to keep from developing the habits, hang-ups and hurts that their parents are dealing with. It is wonderful, Biblically sound material applicable to all kids and youth. The number of kids and youth attending these programs is growing each week. Please pray for these new ministries.
We will again have an eight-week series of dinners and Bible studies on Wednesday evenings organized by the Family Life Committee starting September 4th and going through October 23rd. The kids will join in The Celebration Place during those eight weeks.
Small Group Ministry (relational ministry in homes) is beginning to get off the ground and we are committed to offering any childcare that is needed for that. It would be great if the small groups that will need childcare would all meet on the same evening (Wednesday would be awesome), so that we can do just one additional evening of ministry.

We adhere to the UMC's Safe Sanctuaries guidelines which means all of our volunteers need to be screened and trained.
We will have a
Safe Sanctuaries training for ALL Kids and Youth ministry volunteers on Tuesday, September 3rd at 3:00 and again at 5:00.
Please plan to attend one f the trainings that day if you plan to volunteer! If you want to volunteer, but absolutely cannot attend one of those trainings, let me know and I'll schedule another one.
We also have a First Aid/CPR class that is highly recommended for all volunteers on August 6th at 6:00 p.m.
Thank you all for everything you do to make the important ministry to kids and youth possible. As you know, if kids don't make a decision to follow Jesus by the time they are 12 years old the odds are they never will.

Community Love Local Mission Project
Reconciliation House Expansion
In May we had a pledge drive to sign up volunteers for this "local mission" project to help construct a much needed addition to Reconciliation House. We had a great response to filling out pledge cards and now is the time for you to follow through!
Higgins will be using our "Community Love" ministry to organize volunteers of all ages to help when appropriate in September and beyond. Skills used in typical mission trip construction projects are needed. Feeding volunteers are needed as well as construction skills, so anyone can be involved.
If you have not already done so, please complete the "Community Love Signup" survey form; that way we will know what skills you have, what days of the week work best for you to volunteer, and how you would like for us to contact you when jobs are ready for volunteer labor. Community Love Signup sheets are available at the FLC Welcome Wagon, in the church office and online. Please return the completed forms to the office, Jim Swaim, Ray Strickland or Paul Bradley.

Volunteers Needed

Here's an opportunity for you to do this.
Tuesday,
August 6, Higgins Memorial UMC will be providing volunteers for the distribution of fresh produce and dry goods to Yancey County families with young children who need assistance providing for them. This is part of the Summer Food Program, sponsored by Partners Aligned Toward Health (PATH), Reconciliation House, and Dig In! Community Garden. Higgins also supports this outreach financially.
We need 8-12 people to do this. There are several different jobs to do starting at 8:00 a.m. The packing is done at the parking lots across N. Main from the church. We need 4 or more people to help pack boxes and then must have at least 8 people to ride in the vans to deliver the boxes. You can do both! Yancey County Transportation vans drive the routes. Delivery teams should be back by noon. HMUMC participated in this program the last 3 summers and it was an eye-opening experience for many of us.
There are over 100 families participating in the program this summer. There are five distribution days throughout the summer. Area churches and organizations provide volunteers.
