4TH ANNUAL CA COMMUNITY DAY SET FOR SEPTEMBER 21

Everyone in the Academy community is invited to the fourth annual CA Community Day on Saturday, September 21. We'll kick off the weekend of events on Friday night with the Charlie David Dinner, followed by our Viking football team vs. Whitehall and the lower school campout. Then join us Saturday for the Viking Rampage Challenge (a very muddy obstacle course for all ages), a full slate of home athletic events, family-fun activities, food trucks and much more. Both days will also feature events surrounding our Alumni Weekend. More details on CA Community Day to come.

SPANISH PROGRAM VISITS PERU

Last month, 19 students departed for an eight-day adventure in Peru with upper school Spanish teachers Ms. Eden, Dr. Jacky and Sra. Chaves. The bulk of their time was spent in the Andes mountains in Cuzco and Ollantaytambo. Besides a visit to the famed Machu Picchu site, students learned about traditional Andean weaving with alpaca wool, made pottery at a ceramics workshop, took a Peruvian cooking class, haggled in the market, and made chocolate from bean to bar. One of the highlights of their time in the mountains was two days of service at the Sacred Valley Project, a dorm in Ollantaytambo for high-school-aged girls that live in remote mountain areas. Our students helped out with an ongoing project at the dorm to build a living space for volunteers. They returned on June 21 tired but smiling with memories to last a lifetime!

DOMINIC FACCIOLLA RETIRES AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Dominic Facciolla retired as athletic director at Columbus Academy at the end of June concluding a 38-year international career in athletic administration. In addition to this final-day interview, read recent tributes to him by students and by a colleague. In the
spring, he was inducted into both the Mid-State League Hall of Fame and the Central Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association's Athletic Director Hall of Fame. Also, check out the coverage from his recognition at last fall's Charlie David Dinner and read a mid-September feature story on him by ThisWeek News.
SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONS

If you know of family members or friends who might like to receive our Viking Voice newsletters and/or the Academy magazines -- such as our Summer 2019 issue (right) arriving in August -- we would be happy to include them in our distribution lists. Please complete and return this form.
Also, if you have social media accounts and do not already follow Columbus Academy on Facebook and Twitter, please do so because information is posted on those channels daily, including emergency information when appropriate. You may also be interested in our YouTube and Instagram feeds.
ARTS & MUSIC SCENE

Rising senior Simon Iobst recently participated in the High School Composition Intensive at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where his music was performed by professional musicians. His final project was writing a six-minute piece for a string quartet in only four days, and Simon's composition was chosen as the finale for the livestreamed concert.
SERVICE LEARNING

As part of a two-week community service camp earlier this month, Columbus Academy upper-schoolers spent time at several local organizations learning about the problem of hunger in our community and participating in a variety of tasks to help alleviate this growing social justice issue. Projects included the planting and harvesting of fresh produce, food sorting and distribution, grocery shopping, and the preparation, delivery and serving of hot meals to adults and children in a variety of settings.
SPORTS REPORT

Columbus Academy is adding a varsity girls golf team to its fall sports offerings. "Craig Yakscoe will be guiding and directing the entire golf program while Maggie Freytag will be the Head Girls Golf Coach," explained Director of Athletics Jason Singleton in the mid-July announcement. "Maggie is an active golfer who competed in high school and has worked in the golf arena for 10 years. She is very knowledgeable about the game, and with her enthusiasm she will do an amazing job." If any upper-schoolers have interest in playing on our new girls golf squad this fall, please contact Coach Freytag at mmftag@gmail.com.
