Not Just a Fender Bender:
Tariffs Could Wreck
the U.S. Auto Sector

The White House has received a report from the Commerce Department on whether imports of automobiles and auto parts “threaten to impair the national security.” Officials are said to be considering applying tariffs as high as 25% to approximately $350 billion of imported autos and auto parts.

This is a huge deal. As U.S. Chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue stated when the tariff threat was first announced:

The U.S. Chamber strongly opposes the administration’s threat to impose tariffs on auto imports in the name of national security.

Today in History

- February 22, 1980 -

The United States hockey team surprised the world when it defeated the Soviets at the XIII Olympic Winter Games. The U.S. team was seen as the underdogs going into the game, while the Soviets had previously won four Olympic gold medals, beginning in 1964, and had been undefeated since 1968. They were quite rightly seen as the greatest hockey team in the world. The Soviets even defeated the U.S. team three days earlier at Madison Square Garden in an exhibition game.

As History.com notes , "Few had high hopes for the seventh-seeded U.S. team entering the Olympic tournament, but the team soon silenced its detractors, making it through the opening round of play undefeated, with four victories and one tie, thus advancing to the four-team medal round. The Soviets, however, were seeded No. 1 and as expected went undefeated, with five victories in the first round."

The crowd was sold out for the February 22 game with 10,000 in attendance. History.com continues: "The so-called Miracle on Ice was more than just an Olympic upset; to many Americans, it was an ideological victory in the Cold War as meaningful as the Berlin Airlift or the Apollo moon landing. Two days later, the U.S. team would defeat Finland 4-2 to win the gold medal.
