Healthy Eating Can Be Simple

According to food author Michael Pollan, you can sum up healthy eating in seven words:

Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Eat food means a balanced diet of whole foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish and other lean proteins and healthy fats) rather than processed foods.  Not too much means stop before you are full.  Mostly plants means fill your plate with fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans.

93-Year-Young Healthtrax Member in the News!

We're so pleased that Healthtrax member Ray Raiche was profiled in the Warwick Beacon recently!

A Rare American
Raymond Raiche is unique in more than a few ways. For starters, the 93-year-old Woonsocket native and long-time Warwick resident only stopped cutting his own grass this year. He still drives his car and still keeps in shape at Healthtrax.

Trainer Spotlight: Eva Thompson, a Trainer Who Bridges the Gap

Have you ever been injured and had to take time off from exercise? Or maybe you have some medical needs or musculoskeletal issues and don't know where to begin. Personal trainer Eva Thompson helps members bridge the gap between therapeutic exercises (or no exercise at all) to making fitness a daily part of life.

Eva learns as much as she can during each client's complimentary Healthy Start appointment to create an individualized fitness plan.  After learning about a member's medical and fitness history, concerns/restrictions and goals, Eva assesses their posture and movement patterns to increase body awareness and begin correcting postural and muscle imbalances.  "I try to help members find ways to move that are safe and healthy for them," says Eva.

Once a solid foundation of posture and movement is established, Eva helps the member gain strength and work toward their goals. She educates her clients about their bodies and how to work within safe limits.

It's never too late to take the first step toward your best self and your best life. Sign up for your Healthy Start appointment with Eva today!

One easy exercise that anyone can do anytime to work on ideal posture is called postural realignment. Here's how: Stand with your back against the wall with heels close to wall. Gently press the following points of contact to the wall for a slow count of 3, then release: back of head, shoulder blades, glutes (buttocks) and palms (arms down at sides). Try to work up to a slow count of 10 and repeat 5 times.
An exercise Eva recommends for building core strength is the  plank. It's safe because the lower back is kept in a neutral position throughout and there are variations for all fitness levels. Here's how: Place palms flat on a bench or chair (if weight bearing bothers your wrists, place bent elbows and forearms on a chair/bench) with shoulders lined up over wrists (if on palms) or over elbows (if on elbows). Walk legs out until body is in a straight line from shoulders to hips. Set on balls of feet with heels lifted. Squeeze stomach muscles like someone is punching you in the belly! Hold the plank, working up to 60 seconds. (To progress the movement, place palms or elbows on the floor.)
